Bits from his column - LINK
quote:

They inexplicably quit selling beer at halftime of the LSU-North Carolina Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in the Georgia Dome Saturday night. Then LSU's coaches began losing brain cells quicker than North Carolina lost football players to suspensions last week.

Not saying the coaches were drinking, but it might be time for another drug test, which was suggested after the Ole Miss-calculations of clock and common sense last season.

quote:

Did LSU have some suspensions at halftime? Is there an investigation going on in Baton Rouge, we don't know about? And why man-to-man on first down from the North Carolina 3? A little of Dean Smith's four corners prevent may have been wiser. Yes, there is a right time for prevent, and the wrong time for man-to-man is with a new sophomore starter when a true freshman is behind him on one of his first-ever plays.

quote:

But remember, this same coaching staff asked quarterback Jordan Jefferson to drop back for a pass while in field goal range late in the Ole Miss game last season after Jefferson had been nearly sacked the play before, had been sacked three times prior in that game and would be sacked an SEC-high 32 times on the season.

Brain cells. They're good to have on the sideline.

quote:

Shepard did not have a 100-yard game to talk about, but he should have. And he would have had LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton and Miles been thinking clearly. Shepard had 58 yards on three carries with a 50-yard touchdown in the first half. He got the ball on two running plays in the second half, finishing with 67 yards. Brain cells. Where are they on this LSU staff?

quote:

Unbelievable. Maybe by the time Shepard is a senior, he'll get 20 touches in a game.

quote:

But then it all stopped as North Carolina coach Butch Davis went to work at the half with about half a team, and LSU's coaches went to happy hour.

Scathing, as usual. Sadly, I can't really argue with him about any of it.

Would he have been just as scathing if Shepard or Peterson had played the entire second half and suffered a torn ACL with LSU up 37-10? Would you have argued with him in that case? Sure, there's no question that they went to the freshmen on defense too early and too often. There's also no question that the players seemed to lose focus too early and too often.
Hindsight is 20/20. And Guilbeau doesn't so much reason to a conclusion as he rants from a prejudice.

So according to your reasoning we can afford to play RS and PP only in the first half, because if we play them for both halves, they could possibly suffer a torn ACL. Well hell, why even play them in the first half, because they could possibly suffer a torn ACL as well? Lets just sit them on the bench and play the scrubs instead, that way we won’t have to worry about a torn ACL.

My point isn't whether they should or shouldn't have played them the second half. My point, if you read what I wrote, is that if they had they played them the entire second half, for whatever good, bad or indifferent reason, and had an injury occurred, the geniuses on here, led by the ubergenius Gilbeau, would be just as critical of the coaching staff for not sitting them down when we had a big lead. Understand?

Maybe, maybe not - but what about when it was 30-17? Don't you think it was time for Shep to start getting some serious touches after that?

I dunno. Maybe they figured the chances of a 97-yd TD pass were 0 in a million. Um, make that 1 in a million. Anyway, maybe the man-to-man was based on assumptions that a big play from Yates was unlikely?

Yeah, great point. Not the best play call given our history in those situations.

So Guilbeau was drinking on the job? Maybe if he stayed sober during games his articles would be worth reading.

The bigger point made is that LSU had an opportunity to close out an opponent in the 3rd Q and make a statement after two lackluster seasons, but instead, due to questionable coaching decisions and multiple player miscues, had to pray for a win at the end. SOS in my book, impaired brain cells or not.

Running Backs that have 100 yard games get banged to crap over the course of the season.

Would you rather have a Russell Shepherd that was 100% the entire season, and gain 58-70 yards per game and score, or

Have a Russell Shepherd run for 100 yards a game and be spent for UA?

Peterson will have to rest this week. He can stay in shells as far as I am concerned.

Did we ever lead this game at any time by 27 points???

No, I wouldn't play them with a-27 pt lead in the 4th Qt w/ 7 minutes remain. (We never reached that point with a big lead like that last game, anyway).

GG is correct on this one

I am starting to agree with the crowd that thinks the whole staff needs to be replaced. LSU has just been painful to watch the last two years. Pellini and Jimbo think our coach is an idiot. Its time for a change.
