I watched the whole game last night… It is amazing how the lack of three point line made that game so much different than it is today. There was hardly any shooting outside of the paint. That had to be one of Dale Brown's best coached games

Rewatched both the games in this thread and few observations:

-Very disciplined offensive play.
-Not a single dunk in either game.
-40 second shot clock came into play only once or twice.
-No 3-point line created a completely different game.
-Either team in both games had 16-18 ft jumpers anytime they wanted but rarely took them.

-Officiating sucked just as bad back then

I was a senior in high school in Kentucky at the time. My dad had raised me to be an LSU Tiger (he graduated LSU in 1954), and I was in a complete slump from losing to UK twice in the regular season and then in the SEC Tournament.

I sent a letter to Coach Brown, begging hinm to beat UK because I couldn't take it anymore from all the folks around me. I never expected a reply, but damned if I didn't get one.

The day of the game against UK I found a letter adressed to me from the Men's Basketball Department of the LSU Athletic Department (Yeah, I know that sounds weird when you read it.). It was a post card from Coach Brown that simply said, "Marc, we will do our best." and it was accompanied by several programs from that season as well as a few papers and notes about LSU Basketball, another page about LSU overall, and even a form to tryout for LSU basketball. (Of course, just because I was from Kentucky didn't mean I could play basketball. I could play trumpet better than anyone, but I sucked at sports even though I loves trying.)

Anyway, I'll never forget that fourth game against UK that year. Yeah, they had beaten us twice in the regular season, and they had beaten us in the SEC Tournament. But that fourth time, when it meant a trip to the Final Four, Ricky Blanton ensured that we BEAT THEIR arse!

I went to school the next day there in Ashland, KY and carried that post card from Coach Brown with me as I wore purple and gold from head to toe. I never had such a good feeling in my life as I had that day. I was really rubbing it in everyone's face because I had caught my share of shyte all year from my peers. It was the most wonderful payback and gloating I ever enjoyed!

Thanks so much for the link, Rudy40! (I'm guessing that's a reference to the great Rudy Macklin who came to LSU from Louisville to play for us in those great days of the late 70s and early 80s.) Your original post has really made my day!

I was there for the Purdue first round game. Amazing

It was so late by the time I made it home I almost called in sick to work the next morning. After 2 am, if I remember correctly and had to wake up at 5:30 to get ready for work. My boss was a big LSU fan as well and told me he watched the entire game and almost stayed home himself. He said he'd of understood if I did call in sick. It was amazing. I don't get to games much anymore, but I enjoyed it when I could.

we were on the edge of our seats the whole second half

It was either 10 or 12 and that's when I went to the concession stand. As I walked back into the arena LSU had cut into the lead by 2. I decided to keep walking the corridor and see what would happen. After a couple minutes I heard the crowd cheering and walked back in, LSU had cut into the lead again. I wasn't overly superstitious but figured I'd keep walking the corridor to see what would happen. It seemed to work. LOL

Wish you'd been in Dallas to try that trick against Louisville. We were looking good at halftime. Then Pervis took over. Great memories of that run which I'll never forget.

Thanks for posting that. I had no business watching that whole thing this late at night. (But I did anyway).

LOL Yea, me too. It always seemed like dle was 1 player away from getting a win in the Final 4. 80/81 Scales goes pro after the previous year. Can only wonder what could have been had he stayed. 85/86 Nikita Wilson declared academically ineligible. Blanton stepped in and did a great job, but he wasn't the inside presence Nikita was.

Great story. I’ve told my similar Daddy Dale story here previously. I missed one home game in nine years. I was an extreme super fan. But I digress...

I went to the Purdue and Memphis State games and when they beat Ga Tech I decided to go. I left very late at night from the LSU campus with two buddies and drove to Atlanta. We stopped at a random country club in the ATL suburbs and walked in like we were members and took showers and cleaned up. It was hilarious. We then went to the OMNI and scored some tickets outside the arena and watched that great victory unfold.

I’ll never forget being cursed out by UK fans as we left, yelling us “ we beat y’all 3 times” like we gave a frick. That was such an amazing run and such a fun team.

One funny tidbit about that, the game was in Atlanta and they would tape wrestling in Atlanta live on TNT back then.

After the game Dale Brown shows up on the set of the wrestling show that same day. Of course they give him the mike and it was hard to get it back.

One thing I remembered besides how crazy with happiness I felt but the coaches on the side during their hand shakes. Does anyone know what Abernathy was conveying to the assistant coach for Kentucky. Abernathy was shaking his finger in the guys face and was being restrained. I have always wondered what that was all about. Anyone know?

I didn't see your post. I brought that up down farther. Do you know why he went after the coach?

I will never forget Ricky pumping those arms running down the court after he made that final basket or Abernathy going after the Kentucky asst Coach.
I remember Sky Walker (his last game, I believe) going up and hugging Dale Brown. I always thought that was class.

This victory remains a top 3 LSU moment for me. You simply have to remember the context:

LSU lost twice to UK in the regular season - and once was to a 26ft TWO POINTER in the Assembly Center by Roger Harden as time expired.

THEN, the narrative was the only shot LSU had to get into the tourney was to win the SEC tourney...they came SUPER CLOSE, but lost their 3rd of the year in the SEC final to...KENTUCKY!! (I can still picture Derrick Taylor clutching his head with both hands in despair when the final buzzer sounded. I felt so bad for them.)

The Tigers snuck in with an 11 seed.

All of that set up the glorious 4th meeting for when it really mattered. My father and I stood in front of the TV the entire game with our arms around each other, jumping and screaming. I will never forget this for as long as I live.
