Good passing + Good defense = Elusive in the SEC

In the SEC, it's rare to have a good passing attack paired with a stingy defense. Since 2014, a team that finished in the top 5 in passing yards per SEC game has also finished in the top 5 in yards allowed per SEC game 3 times:
2017 Auburn (7-1 SEC)
2015 Florida (7-1 SEC)
2014 Alabama (7-1 SEC)
All three won their division. What are the chances 2018 LSU is the next team on that list?
For reference, last year we were 10th in passing yards per SEC game and 3rd in yards allowed per SEC game.
In 2016, we were 11th in passing and 3rd in defense.
I think it's a good bet we'll finish top-5 again in defense. Can we improve on 10th/11th in passing yardage? Note that we were already a fairly efficient passing team last year, coming in 5th in QBR and 4th in yds/att. But will we see more volume?
Great site to look up this stuff

maybe we should have Tre'on Harris or Blake Sims as our QB lol

Good question...and the reason its rare is because a high yardage passing attack usually results in the defense staying on the field more, giving up more yards.
We need more production, thats obvious, but it needs to be efficient and not turn the ball over.

Slim to none....did any of those teams break in a brand new QB the year they did it?
ETA I guess Stidham was new....but he wasn't new to starting in a major conference.

TIME OF POSS is the key. throwing it all around leads to 45 second possessions. That will kill any D. Must be balanced and efficient on third down.

Cool link you provided. I've looked at that site before but forgot about that feature.
I'm very sure we'll move up from 13th in the SEC in passing attempts per game, and move up from 10th in passing TDs. Getting just 50 yards more per game will move LSU up from 8th to 3rd in passing yardage.
I think a top 5 passing attack is definitely doable. Just have to hope the OLine comes together, and the Tigers are well on their way.

Aubie was 7-1 in 2017 during the regular season in SEC play.
We gave them their lone SEC regular season loss.

Don't disagree with you at all, but I recall Les Miles' 1970's offenses leading to huge TOP disadvantages in many a first-half of games. It was comical sometimes.

Not only that, we went 2-1 against those teams, with the sole loss to Alabama in OT, in a game we had won except for that complete horseshite unsportsmanlike penalty on Vadal Alexander.

Tre'on Harris
While Harris did have the most passing yards, Grier had 1200 yds in 5 starts and a 6th game played in which inflated their passing numbers. Harris was awful that year. Yards is a dumb metric to go by: Harris was 10th in the SEC in YPA and Efficiency. For reference, Brandon Harris was 7th in both those categories.

An offense that throws the ball a lot is not conducive to a solid defense. It puts strain on the defense by hurting TOP and having more turnovers.
That is why you need a 50/50 balance like most teams that win at high levels. The passing game has to be a threat downfield, but you still need to run a lot.

Top 5 passing in the entire SEC? That'll be a tall order this season.
Bama has Tua.
Auburn has Stidham.
Missorri has Lock.
OM has Ta'amu.
UGA has Fromm.
Does anyone expect Burrow to out throw those guys?
