Again.. we have all the technology in the world to place a tiny camera on the inner corner of a goalpost to solve this.

The camera would have to be on the outside of the upright. The ball can pass over the upright as long as all of the ball is inside the outer plane of the upright.

This is wrong. The entire ball has to be inside the post.

If any of it passes over the top it would be no good.

To me this is the best angle other than the ref’s. Camera, kicker and goal post all lined up. Kicker thought he hit it.

That’s a terrible angle that’s skews the view in favor of a make

The further you go back and right of the kicker, the more it’s going to look like it was inside of the post.

I thought we learnt this from 2011 OKST?

If the ball goes over the bars, it must be completely inside the posts for it to be good. If it clips even a little of the plane of the goalposts then it is no good.

In the NFL, this is good.

My bad.

Looks like it's different from the NFL rule, which is apparently the outside edge of the upright.

Who knew?

You’d be correct if this was a center kick from the center of the hash marks. This is a kick towards the left goal post from the right hash. That’s the line of sight you want.

I think the line of sight you'd want would be directly under that goalpost looking up?

That’s not how angles and geometry work. Again, the further right of the kicker you go, the more it will look inside the post. Looks like this video is taken from the sideline.

Why can't we have field goal post be at least 5ft higher?

How can you tell from that video where the ball is directly above the left upright? You can't. The only way to know is having a camera below/above the left upright.

Exactly and that angle will make it look like the ball was inside the uprights for longer than it was.

Of course the ref’s view was better. Show it. Otherwise my point was the video I posted was a better view than being center for this particular kick. You said angles don’t work that way. Grok agrees with me.
quote:

For a kick originating on the right hash that is drifting toward (or aimed at) the left upright, the single most informative camera position is the one that puts these points as close to collinear as possible:

1. Camera

2. Kicker (or the ball’s release point)

3. Ball’s flight path

4. Left upright

When those line up, left/right becomes a pure binary judgment with almost no parallax. Any significant offset (sideline angle, pure end-zone camera that is centered on the middle of the goalposts, or a high-and-wide broadcast shot) introduces a small but meaningful amount of depth/angle error that makes “just inside vs. just outside / over the post” harder to read.

That’s why, when a truly definitive under-the-post or perfectly aligned behind-the-kicker view isn’t available (as was the case on the ESPN broadcast), the next-best things are:

• Any fan or sideline angle that gets reasonably close to that line of sight (the Nanduri clip is in that category — better than the main TV feed for trajectory tracking).

• The official standing directly under the left upright, who by design is looking up the exact plane that matters.
