Item sports guy sinks teeth into assignment at Baton Rouge
Regional

BATON ROUGE, La. — As a young sports fan growing up in south Louisiana, there were a few things you
could count on with nearly absolute certainty.

You’d get excited looking forward to the upcoming Saints season with low, low expectations (eight
wins in a season was a smashing success). LSU football was fun to watch, except when Steve
Spurrier’s Gators came to town.

Then you’d also know that once it started to heat up in the summer, LSU baseball,
under the direction of legendary coach Skip Bertman, was more than likely headed back to Omaha,
Neb., to take another swing at the College World Series.

All these years later, the names of several of those great LSU baseball players such as Brandon
Larson, Ben McDonald, Ryan Theriot, Todd Walker, Brad Cresse, and even more recent players such as
D.J. LeMahieu, Louis Coleman and Jared Mitchell – trust me, the list can go on and on – still
resonate in a profound way. It’s not so much for what they did in the big leagues, but for the
things they accomplished wearing purple and gold.

Once football is over, two things you know to expect: Mardi Gras is right around the corner and
another LSU baseball campaign is about to get underway.

In southern Louisiana especially, basketball is mostly just a filler until the college baseball
season starts. The emphasis on college baseball as opposed to pro baseball is mostly, and I speak
for myself, there isn’t really a pro baseball team close enough to develop and interest. The
closest MLB teams are in Houston, Arlington and Atlanta.

You may want to link to the article instead of posting it, Chicken no like.

Good read but it seemed to stop abruptley. He was excited about Sam Houston for some reason and that's where his piece stopped.

ETA: And I don't see how he is an "outsider" considering he has been a fan for 30 years.

It's the Huntsville, Texas newspaper. You know, the location of Sam Houston State.

I'd hardly call any of that article an "outsider perspective"

Hello all, I'm the guy who wrote that column. I'm from Slidell originally and have lived in Huntsville since '05 and Katrina swooped in. It was kind of an interesting deal, the whole weekend. Basically, I was 9 years old, the age we're all the most impressionable, when the Tigers won their first title in 1991, so getting to come back and work the regional, go behind the scenes, etc. was a pretty great experience, especially to stay there to the end to see the final out and celebrate the regional title.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback. Writing it was fun.

Good piece and perspective. Must have been a great assignment. My comments were targeted at OP's phrasing, though it has no bearing on the content.

How do the SHSU folks enjoy the weekend? They had a strong team.

Thanks. I think they did. Once the draw came out, I don't think many realistically thought they could get out of the region in the toughest environment in college baseball, but would put up a good showing like they did a year ago at Rice for the Houston Regional. They played well, shut down ULL for two games for the most part (errors and hit batters killed them) and came out swinging against Nola.

It's hard to think that they didn't enjoy the weekend in Baton Rouge. It wasn't the best-played baseball fielding-wise, but nearly all six games were tense and exciting. There can't be a better atmosphere or environment in baseball. I'm sure they would all say the same.
