True.
But recruiting at Minnesota prior to portal and NIL era was a different story.
Much like Will Wade, Pitino is built for this era

shite I’d be shocked if Pitino seriously considered LSU

Could’ve fooled me (he said sarcastically).
Seriously though, might as well get started with the coaching search now.

I'll take this disaster over McMeh 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.
On April 1, 2014, in Pitino's FIRST season at Minnesota, the Golden Gophers defeated Florida State University 67–64 in overtime in the NIT semifinals, breaking a school record with its 24th win of the season.
On April 3, 2014, exactly one year to the date he was hired, Pitino won his first NIT Championship by defeating Larry Brown's SMU team 65–63, securing a school record 25th win.
Following a historically bad third year at Minnesota, Pitino orchestrated a dramatic turnaround by improving the team's record by 16 wins in his fourth season, utilizing a revamped roster that included five new contributors. The team’s success helped earn Pitino the Big Ten Coach of the Year award for 2016-2017.
On March 21, 2019, in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, No. 10 Minnesota faced No. 7 seed Louisville, a school he previously helped coach and a program which his father Rick had been head coach of for 16 years. Minnesota defeated the Cardinals 86–76 to move on to the Round of 32. In the Round of 32, the Gophers lost 70–50 to 2nd-seeded Michigan State.17.

He had an 8-year run at Minnesota and went 54-96 in conference.
So you’re saying he’s an improvement

No names that start with “Mc”!

Out of the “old” names on that list, Beilein is the most interesting. He really had Michigan rolling before suddenly leaving for the NBA in 2019. He’s in his 70s and I can’t imagine he would want to mess with the NIL and portal era, but if you wanted a guy to spend 2-3 years to reset your program backed with enough money to get the players he wants and then hand it off to someone younger, you could do a LOT worse.
That said, I don’t think there’s a chance in hell he coaches college ball again.

And do what with him? Does your school have an opening that you want to fill with Richard Pitino?
Posted on 3/22/25 at 3:11 pm to DrrTiger
Yup. I like this. But I wonder if Villanova is going after him currently.

So we fire Wade to ultimately hire the son of the dirtiest college basketball coaches in history? The McMoral brigade won’t like that one bit.
No. The people with common sense won't like that.

The easier path are retreads who are ready to bounce back.
I’m more skeptical about the mid major guys that don’t have P5 experience. Their style & or success may not translate well. Retreads are fine if they have a record like

Pearl, Barnes and Beard in the SEC, Sampson at Houston, and Pitino at St John’s
Rich Pitino was awful at Minnesota. He strikes me as someone who probably belongs where he is.

Unfortunately, a lot of luck is involved in getting the right guy at the right time. Wade is really the only one of note currently on the market this season and he’s obviously not coming back here.
Next year there will be new candidates. I’m more interested in assistant coaches. Young ones. NBA & college. The college asst coaches at blue bloods are usually ace recruiters. Would improve talent immediately. And if they’ve been learning from Bill Self or Mark Few or Dan Hurley for 3 or 4 years he could probably draw up a better gameplan then some of the shite we’ve seen the last few years.

Hopefully not. Our admins don't know basketball at all. I don't want them trying to project the potential head coaching abilities of assistants.

Will he still be available after next year? Because whether we like it or not or agree or not, we do not and will not have an opening this year.
Posted on 3/23/25 at 8:55 am to DrrTiger
I have mentioned the names of two guys in previous posts: Pitino and Huss. I would be happy with Pitino, but Huss would be my first choice.
Posted on 3/23/25 at 8:57 am to DrrTiger
We just need to face the reality that LSU men’s basketball is dead.
Posted on 3/23/25 at 9:21 am to LSU Patrick
I really want Ben McCollum. I follow Drake basketball due to a friend of mine, and everything about him is what you want. He's young, enthusiastic, and a great Xs and Os. They big concern would be him coming to the South and recruiting. I think if he had a good NIL backing it wouldn't matter though.

?????
RICK Pitino is currently at St John’s after his time in Siberia and then Iona. They played Arkansas and Cal yesterday. It was kind of a big deal.
His son is sort of a retread as this point too, but he’s never sniffed the same level of success as his Dad, so I wasn’t referring to him. Giving you the school Rick coaches at should have been enough.
Rick Pitino isn’t a fit here, obviously. I was just using him as an example of a an experienced retread who got a program turned around quickly.

You know, the subject of the thread? I know who Rick is. I got downvoted insatiably a few years ago when I suggested we hire him when he was at Iona. I seem to have confused you. I digress.

Congrats, they get 1 maybe 2 good years and he's off into retirement. We gotta be looking beyond just a bandaid for a few years and hoping for the best
