Getting Burrow was a big win but I don't know that it'll save them from getting shackled

to the turnover chain:

A few tidbits from the article.

quote:

In a battle of established defenses vs. retooling offenses, does Miami have the edge over LSU?

Whether or not Richt’s spread offense or the Burrow/Ensminger system can get going in 2018 will be major storylines, but in Week 1, each faces established defenses and DCs who are known for bringing pressure and overwhelming iffy offenses.

quote:

1. A new QB vs. the turnover chain

Miami’s top-25 defense garnered a lot of media attention with the chain their defenders would don after taking the ball from the offense. It was a fun gimmick that gave the defense some energy and identity. The Canes picked off 17 passes on the year and ranked third nationally in takeaways.

They return all three starting LBs, three starting DBs and a fourth in Trajan Brandy who started three games in 2017, plus edge-rusher Joe Jackson. The DL was devastated by graduation and early departure, and they also lost star DL coach Craig Kuligowksi, who built a reputation of churning out NFL pass-rushers

It’s certainly a tall order for a QB who hasn’t practiced with his team as of the drafting of this article to navigate a veteran group eager to parade the chain on the sideline (if they haven’t retired it).

The concern with trying to execute multiple philosophies is the Cane pressure package, which includes fire zone blitzes, disguises, and all of those returning starters

quote:

2. Peso defense vs. the Cane spread

Last season was a disappointing one for the LSU defense. They “only” finished 18th in the country in S&P+ and had to live in a rather limited base defense, due to the lack of a nickel that DC Dave Aranda trusted. This season they have greater depth and knowhow in the secondary, meaning that we may finally see the kind of peso package that Aranda was dominating with at Wisconsin.

This ideal package for Aranda features two DL, four LBs, and five DBs, with the peso moniker coming from the fact that a peso is worth about a nickel, and this is a type of nickel package. With the extra speed and versatility on the field from playing multiple LBs and mobile DL, the defense can move around up front in ways that can confuse OL and create mismatches for the pass-rush.

The Canes would seem due to make a leap on offense with senior QB Malik Rosier, but they have a few hangups. One is the departure of their top two targets, WR Braxton Berrios and TE Christopher Herndon IV, and the other is the rebuild along the OL, which will require elevating Navaughn Donaldson from being a true freshman guard in 2017 to a true sophomore tackle. They’ll also be plugging in Tennessee transfer Venzell Boulware (not on campus yet), and OL is clearly an area of concern.

This LSU defense is one of the toughest fronts to face with an inexperienced OL. There’s not much comfort to be had from Rosier’s mobility either, as he was sacked on 6.1 percent of his dropbacks a year ago.

Rover LB Devin White, who had 4.5 sacks a year ago, could see that number increase even more with two OLBs on the line who can show pressure before dropping back into coverage. Here’s an example of how that blitz looks from a 3-3-5 package:

quote:

It looks much more likely that both of these teams will end up fielding truly fearsome defenses than that either will be particularly good on offense in week one.

With that in mind, this game likely comes down to which offense manages to protect the ball and make the most of opportunities created by their own defense. Given the Canes’ experience in the secondary and at QB, juxtaposed with Burrow’s lack of experience in the LSU program, the pick here is a Hurricane victory.

I don’t have a problem with the logic in this assessment. With that said I have LSU winning 27-23

Can see how he would draw that conclusion but I think he's overrating Miami quite a bit.

LSU is going to beat them up on the line of scrimmage.

IMO Ree, it's damn near impossible for these guys to make any sort of accurate prediction with all of the unknowns on the LSU offense. This team could win 6 games or be up near 12 and neither would surprise me.

Agreed. Being that we have no idea what Burrow will do at QB (personally I think he does well for us) Oline questions, and CB questions that won't be answered until summer/fall camp, the jury is still out on this team. Lots of "What if's" and "Well if this..." with this team.

We will know how this season shakes out once camp gets going and the pieces here and there are either put in place or are still missing.

Miami defense is good but not great. They gave up 21 pts per game but really started getting exposed at the end of the year giving up 31 pts per game over their last 4.

Finished the season 38th in total defense. Good but not elite.

Now I'm not sure what they have returning. I do know they had three defensive players drafted and at least 3 others sign UDFA deals.

I’m confused by your reaction to getting Joe Burrow.

Before he picked LSU, you were pumping so much sunshine on the rant that people were getting sun burned.

Then Joe Burrow commits and you basically lose your mind for a day.

Now you are starting threads about how LSU might not be able to overcome the Miami defense.

I guess my confusion is about how you can be less optimistic about LSU’s 2018 season after we upgrade the QB position than you had before.

It seems pretty obvious that when a good team adds a good player in a position that was considered a weakness, it would make that team better.

You seem to be giving the impression that you somehow feel less confident in the team than before.

It just doesn’t make any sense.

From what I see here we match up better on both lines....if we protect the football we win, plain and simple. That was always what got Miami rolling last year in games. They want to use Joe’s inexperience as a plus for Miami, but what this doesn’t mention is how well Joe protects the football. It’s always been one of his strengths his entire playing career....that plus a retooled DL for Miami could spell major trouble for the Canes. Geaux Jeaux!!

I thought you would have put a least a little of your optimistic spin toward LSU concerning the article .....

Coach O gunna be mad but your post gives him a possible out with Miami but not in the end with final Wins Vs. Losses

He said this about their Dline.

"The DL was devastated by graduation and early departure, and they also lost star DL coach Craig Kuligowksi, who built a reputation of churning out NFL pass-rushers"

I think their defense will not be as good as last year. Not the first game anyway.

Because Ree knows we still have O and doesn't want to say that Joe puts us over the top since it still may not make up for O's shortcomings.

Did you respond to the wrong post? I thought I was universally known as an LSU hater, an O hater and that I'm not a real fan.

That explanation doesn’t make sense.

He had no issue saying that LSU was going to have a good season before we had Burrow so why would O’s shortcomings matter now?

He was always trying to say O will lift this potential 6-6 mess he inherited from Miles to an 8-4 Team, knowing full well the team should have been expected to go 8-4 at worst to begin with. But they could always say look how good he did with the crappy QB situation Miles saddled him with!

Now that the QB situation looks so promising, he knows the expectations should be 10-2 but knows O has the potential to keep us weighted down at 8-4 by screwing up games like he did last September and January.

Instead of spinning him as the hero, O could now be exposed as the weak link, and that makes Prince and Posse very nervous.

Questioning how a rag with "Enquirer" in their name is breaking LSU recruiting news before the player, his family, Coach Eaux with a "hold that Tiger" or other recruiting services is not losing one's mind.

Here is an example of what I have come to expect with any tabloid with Enquirer in the name. This is from the Ledger-Enquirer:

LSU wide receiver Jonathan Giles (89) and linebacker Donnie Alexander (48) celebrate a 17-16 victory over Florida with LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, second from right, and his wife Kelly Orgeron after an NCAA college football game on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, in Gainesville, Fla.

Is Jonathan Giles the next Michael Jackson? He went from a smallish black guy to a hulking white guy with blond hair in a couple months. Pretty impressive.

Ok throw the temporary insanity out of the question.

Why do you seem less confident in LSU now than you did a couple of weeks ago?

The only thing that has changed is that we added a good QB. It would seem like your confidence would be even higher, not wavering like it seems to be.

I was one of the few who enjoyed your sunshine pumping. It at least broke up the monotonous O bashing.
