re: Brennan welcomes Burrow

Brennan is going to make an excellent starter after this season.

Burrow has two years of eligibility. Are you guessing that Burrow will win the job this year, and then Brennan will overtake him next year? Or that Burrow will have a fantastic year this year, and forego his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft?

[schedule] doesn’t [factor into preseason rankings]
Do you remember the 2000's West Virginia teams that were consistently in the preseason top-ten, several times top 5, particularly after Miami left the BigEast? While those teams were pretty good, there is no doubt they got ranked that high largely because their Charmin-soft schedule led people to believe they were likely to go undefeated in what was, but shouldn't have been, a BCS conference.

I find it incredible that he wasn't named the starter. He was the only QB in either LSU or Ohio State spring games to complete over 50% of his passes. In fact Burrow was 15-of-22 in the air (68.2%) for 238 yards with 2 TDs as well, against 0 INTs. Burrow also ran 3 times for 8 yards.
It was probably a tough call. Burrow's competitor for the starting spot had the only chance, between the two of them, to play on a Saturday when the game was still on the line. And he did great. I think it was just a situation where there were two good guys who would start most places competing for one spot.
Just to follow up on the above a little bit, as an OSU fan with an unhealthy college football obsession who came over here to see what you guys were saying about Burrow, I think he's going to be good. Possibly very good.

I mean people really feel a 3rd string QB at another P5 conference school is the difference?
You might be underrating him a little bit. He was second string as a redshirt freshman, and then moved to third string last year at least partly because he broke a bone in his throwing hand in fall camp. So he came in behind a multi-year starter (Barrett) who set a lot of school and conference records. Then he was, by all accounts, neck-and-neck with another very promising young player to take over the starting position. And to my knowledge, no one knows that he lost that battle. It could very well be that the OSU staff didn't make a decision in the spring, and Burrow didn't want to roll the dice any longer.

What makes people think this guy will even be a starter or get significant playing time this season?

Idk, maybe because he looks way better than anything LSU had at qb?. That's one reason.
Another reason is, Burrow transferred for one reason only: he wanted to start. It seems likely that Burrow would have transferred someplace else if the LSU coaching staff hadn't, at minimum, given him the impression that it was more likely than not that he would be the starter next season.

If their fan base is like ours, [the fact they thought Burrow was their best QB] doesn’t excite me much.

The OSU fanbase is certainly like the LSU fanbase (or any other large group of people) in that there is no single opinion on any question, including whether Burrow or Haskins was the better option. I would guess that, among the subgroup who pay attention to things like this, it would be something like 30% slightly favored Haskins, 30% slightly favored Burrow, 40% felt they hadn't seen enough of either to have a meaningful preference, and thought either was a good option.

Y’all sure have high expectations for a career 3rd team qb.

Burrow was 2nd string his redshirt freshman year (and, to my eye, looked very good in limited mop-up duty). Last year, his redshirt sophomore year, he was 3rd string at least in part because he broke a bone in his throwing hand in fall camp.

OSU's path to undefeated is pretty easy.

LSU's schedule is definitely tougher than OSU's - LSU's may be the toughest in the country this year - but it's a strong exaggeration to say OSU's path to an undefeated season is pretty easy. There's a good chance OSU will be an underdog at Penn State, and games at Michigan State and vs. Michigan are likely to be tough (particularly if Shea Patterson pans out for Michigan). Hosting TCU in the preseason could be a reasonably tough game as well.
