This isn't Arkansas. Putting a car salesman's name prominently on something like this, when he had absolutely nothing to do with those championships or even the program in general, seems to go against the norm for naming anything at LSU
HE PAID FOR THE frickING THING.

without gerry lane's money .. the thing wouldn't be there .. so would you rather just not have it there ?? or would you like a nice championship plaza bearing the name of the person that paid for it ?? you can't have it both ways ... and you suck at analogies .. neither tiger stadium or the pmac were built with private funds, dumb arse ..

Dude, your list sucks. All that you listed were performance venues. This thing isn't. I'm guessing he paid for it. Presumably, you'd be happier if it didn't exist.
not mention his list includes a plethora of venues built at a state university using state money to build ... i guarantee you, if someone wrote the AD a check for $100 million to build a new basketball arena .. their name would be on it ... does this guy understand how much LSU depends on private donations ?

Shooter is right. Great that they can pony up and give but I would not want my name on this if I were him.

Here a little funny tidbit, how many of y'all know/knew that Gerry lanes son played baseball for Tulane...the only reason he supports lsu is bc of it's market in baton rouge. They're a Tulane family.

an amazing concept used by a good businessman .. imagine that ! and exactly what would tulane put in the "gerry lane championship plaza" in front of turchin stadium ? conference usa tourney plaques ?

and how do you feel about the names of 80% of the stadiums in the NFL and virtually every bowl game ?

I wish I had a ton of money so I could donate for something right outside of tiger sdadium and have my name on it as big as possible.
I don't think the people complaining about it are madmthat he donated it, just that his name is the most prominent thing on the structure. Why not "the LSU circle if champions" and in smaller font something like "presented by Gerry lane".
I think it looks too commercialized (for lack of a better term).

The baseball team is 7-0......i guess people have to find SOMETHING to bitch about?

quote:maybe. Definitely would not have done it like that. Visiting fans are probably thinking he was a former coach or player.

right. this is why i would rather it was done differently.
the cox communications academic center is clearly not named after a single person and probably wouldn't be confused for that. and 90% of the casual fans (even lsu ones) don't know about it. but pretty much everyone (or at least a good percentage) that goes to baseball games see the gerry lane circle of champions.

just like fans at arkansas think bud walton played hoops there and dean reynolds played or coached football there ..

note: WE'RE NOT ARKANSAS OR THE NFL OR BOWL GAMES.

Rag, the great thing is that we are not Arkansas...

because he paid for the whole thing, coon, and he donates a boat load of money to LSU and has been for years with little or no recognition for it ... this is just big time college athletics today .. the cost of amenities and doing business has just far exceeded what the schools can squeeze out of we fans, so they have to look at the corporate sector for money ... having one's name on something is about the best selling point a school has for getting them to write them a check ... personally .. i wonder how much the thing really cost and why TAF couldn't have just done it with monies collected from the baseball tradition fund personally ... i am not arguing the point that it does look a little strange up there .. i am just discussing why it is up there ..
Posted on 2/28/11 at 7:45 am to TigahRag
i think the point is its extremely gaudy. I understand getting his name on it but it almost seems like a personal shrine to him.

Count me in the group that thinks it is cheesy as hell and cheapens Alex Box. I would certainly prefer that the Circle of Champions not exist over the Gerry Lane Used Car World of Champions.
