Gary Crowton

BYU Head Coach
2001- 12-2
2002- 5-7
2003- 4-8
2004- 5-6
Oregon OC
2005- 10-2
2006- 7-6
It seems as if everywhere that Gary Crowton travels, his first year are always amazing, he inherits a football team and is able to continue what the coach before him was doing. As the next year rolls on, he begins to incorporate his own ideas which following his career always seems to lead to destruction. What scares me is that the same the thing is happening at LSU, we are progressively becoming worst. Something needs to be done before we end up with a 6-6, 5-7 seasons of the past. With crowton running our offense which i might had has a collection of big time players, we are going to end up shooting ourselves in the foot. Change is needed. for the first time in my life i use an Obama slogan, Change: "Yes We Can!"

Crowton's got a great offense when he's got a veteran QB that he inherits. Once the guy moves on and he's got to build his next QB from scratch, he is incapable.
Crowton is seriously a terrible quarterback coach, and his scheme is a mishmash of bullshite. I will not miss him.

I dont know, the exact same pattern happened to Jimbo when he was here under Miles. I mean, are positive that this Crowten's fault? I am not saying that it isn't, I just think it is strange that two coordinators in a row just forgot how to coach offense.

I dont put 100% of the blame on Crowton, i just feel that Crowton is the reason LSU is not developing Jordan Jefferson properly, and i dont support many of the play calls that we make week after week. Les is responsible for much of this, but i feel like as the OC, he is more to blame for the offensive struggles.

Oh, I completely agree about the play calling. But, I haven't agreed with much of the play calling since Miles got here. I think we just usually have better athletes that break tackles and make plays. You know, it isn't very often that we have a player catch a pass deep for a touchdown. The Keiland Williams run comes to mind immediately against Va Tech as an example of what I am saying. But, again, we aren't in the meetings or on the headsets during the games, so who knows what is really going on.

I'm not so sure about that. He lucked out when he stumbled upon the Davey-to-Reed bubble screen play midway through the 2001 season, but other than that, he always seemed to be pretty steadily mediocre in his coordinating (and also pretty damn good in his individual coaching).

Did jimbo handle the QB's during his time here? what about Saban?
Posted on 11/23/09 at 1:31 am to tigerfan102
Jimbo was more of the QB coach than OC. Being a QB coach is his thing. Saban did with the offense, just like Spurrier did with his defense. Saban didn't do much with the offnse at all from what from what I know.

Miles is the head coach. Obviously there is a problem with the offense and I blame Miles for not "fixing" whatever is wrong. shite, high school teams run a better offense than LSU does.
For me it's the fact that Miles seems totally lost in a pile of money and doesn't have a clue as to what he's being paid for.
Also Crowton should simplify the play book so the team has some idea of what they are supposed to do before they line up in front of 90,000 fans and national tv.
It's a fricking joke!!!!!!!!!

I can't stand the way the rotate the players or mix up the plays. It seems as if no one can get a feel for what is going on.
Posted on 11/23/09 at 1:35 am to TigerLunatik
Certainly, you shouldn't do it if you can't coach it well enough to do it smoothly. For every false start or delay of game penalty that comes from the usual pre-snap chaos, there are 2 to 3 times as many plays that get snapped just in time, but that suffer from being hectic and rushed.
Posted on 11/23/09 at 1:39 am to Doc Fenton
Not only that. It seems like everytime a running back starts to get going, they take him out or start to throw the ball. If a wr is having a good game in the first half, they don't seem to target him more in the second. I like the idea of mixing up formations and stuff, but not at the cost of getting illegal substitution penalties and having the guys more worried about lining up in the right spot than they are on making a play.

Would Crowton have rested Josh Reed in the 2nd half against Bama in 2001?

How can a team play (execute) with a lack of confidence? how confident can a team be when they come out of the huddle with no clue as to what their individual assignments are until they look to the sidelines for the great "check with me call". It is absolutely stupid.

Exactly. I think he'll make a frickin' great head coach, personally.
1) He mentors Qbs.
2) He knows enough about offense to have good input but as HC won't have to mess with playcalling (which is his weakness).
3) He recruits like hell.
4) He's well respected.

and see that is supposed to be his strength. That is why he is called the wizard. shite, in '07 they were doing pieces on him on TV for all of the games LSU was playing. Our offense was pretty damn exciting in '07, but there were some of the typical plays that making just say WTF?
