You went with Weinke/Weeden instead of Mauck? How old are you? Are you an LSU fan?

Zach Lee was a decent QB coming in. He wasn't going to start right away. He may have never been an NFL talent. He wasn't even Matt Flynn or Jarret Lee caliber coming in to college based on scouting. Yet LSU fans had decided already because he chose us that he would be Peyton Manning. The guy didn't really have a choice to make. He just had to play a game to get the money he needed to make the only choice he was ever given. Playing baseball in the spring is tough when you're a QB on a team that doesn't have many arms. He wouldn't have been a starter for baseball most likely because of it and would have been a Chad Jones role in May at best. So the whole two sport star debate is silly. In the end that would have hurt his draft position 3 years later. So once again, he only had one option and that was to leverage for more money and go pro at 18.

his baseball draft status and our dire need for a QB at the time has definitely elevated the QB prospect he was in the heads of many.

I believe I heard somewhere that pro athletes have to pay taxes in every state they play in. If this is true I'm guessing you take the percentage of pay you earn at that location and pay taxes on that.

Agents only get around 3-4 percent of the contract. Agents make their money off of players on the endorsement deals where they can get more of a percentage.

Yea people forget about the benifits that come with it. He will reach 45 days in majors no doubt. That means worse case scenario he has over a million aND gets at least 30k a year for the rest of his life.

Any shot he does pull a Weinke/Weeden? Hell LSU could use a starter in 2018.

I believe that's known as a "Mauck/Booty" in Louisiana.

So think I g he paid income tax, he put about 3M or less in the bank.

Then comes the living in LA, buying a home there, etc

Great money, but not like having 3 million and living easy in Louisiana.

True, but he's from McKinney. His family isn't hurting for money to begin with...

So what's his status if he wanted to play football. College teams really benefit from QBs like this. Weinke, Weeden, Mauck!!!!

Understand. That's why every single person going thru the draft should rent an apartment in a state like Texas and become a resident.
There must be some law preventing this for things like pro sports.

Ah, and here we have the problem with sports today. A gifted player takes the money and most fans agree because you make a lot of up front money without ever having to prove yourself. Take the money every time!

Money continues to ruin the purity of sports. Just think how much better the college game of football would be if the big college football programs could not buy the best high school recruits. And if the NFL, NBA, MLB and agents could not buy off young athletes.

I can't imagine the pressure now on 16 year old high school kids to be the "It" kid. How that affects their egos, families, coaches and other kids and families who are competing for exposure and playing time. And when it does not work out the sense of failure and pressure. So yeah, take the money if it sniffs your life. And when you get that money, you've arrived, so where's the motivation to be the best you can be? You have your payday.

You have to pay taxes in every state you play in no matter where you live.

If he wanted to play football he would have 4 years to play football. Fully eligible.

once your clock starts, it does not stop. if he enrolled in classes, his clock started. you don't get to take a leave of absence and come back 6 years later

Yes, this is what I meant by "where you earn them". I'm not positive about athletes, if they have any special rules (I don't think they do), but what you guessed is typical tax treatment.
