There's 10 pitchers with a sub 2.37 ERA currently.
20 sub 3.00.
By the end of the season, those numbers will be reduced to almost half.
So a lot of phenomenal pitchers.

Zach Wheeler
Aaron Nola
Ranger Suarez
All have been significantly better than Skenes and that's just on one team.
Fried and Sale have been better and that's just five total in his own league.

I mean he has started 5 games. He is Obviously a first ballot HOF guy if he stopped right now. come on. Do we have to try and rate the kid after every game he pitches. let's enjoy watching him and give him a few years and then see where he is compared to others.

OP admitted he doesn't really follow MLB. Nobody seriously thinks Skenes is currently a top 5 pitcher in the big leagues after 5 starts.

I bet he added to all star roster
Posted on 6/6/24 at 4:46 pm to Morpheus
No but he’s heading in that direction. I think he will be there in a couple of years.

Too bad he'll leave the pirates in good time. MLB is a joke. Major changes needed. Some Teams gross revenue are LESS than other teams payroll!

He might be a legitimate ROTY candidate if he keeps this up.
He’s already second best odds to win it.

No, but the potential is obviously there and it may not take him long to reach it. He might be a legitimate ROTY candidate if he keeps this up.
My mlb app pushed a notification today ranking staring pitchers and had Skenes listed as #8 overall. Should he’s prob close or there already.

no but he would be with a top 5 Pitchers strike zone. he just won’t get that for a couple of years and possible a big market move
Wrong! He’s there already. He could lay a few eggs and recalibrate expectations but he’s there right now if he continues what he’s done to date.

He’s second best on the pirates right now.
He’s the best pitcher on the Pirates. Jones also having crazy good rookie season to date. Keller has trended better but still isn’t their ace. If pirates play playoff game tomorrow it’s Skenes or Keller and probably Skenes.

26). Once he's allowed to go longer in games and eat innings, he'll shoot up the rankings quickly.
He’s Striking out too many batters and throwing too many pitchers per inning. Pirates certainly protecting their investment, but his innings pitched are associated with his higher number of pitches thrown per batter than pirates handling.hes throwing around 100 pitches per start.

Top 5 pitcher in the MLB means you're a Cy Young type arm that season. He's not there yet.
He is there, but would need to be better not worse going forward. It’s possible.

Game has certainly changed, pitchers aren't asked to throw 120+ pitches and go 9 innings anymore. A pitcher who can get into the 7th with around 100 pitchers and a sub 3.00 ERA is an ace. Now spin rates are all the rage, along with the data that is tracked. However, saying Skenes is a top 5 already is just LSU fans being biased. He is having a great start to his pro league, yet you have other rookie pitchers who are performing as well. Not to mention the tons of other young ppl there and former unknowns who are currently dominating. Can Skenes be considered a top 5? Well yeah if he pitches like this all year but after 5 starts it's all just premature.
Wrong. He was listed as #8 starting pitcher today by mlb. Everything subjective but he’s certainly in contention for top 10 spot today.

Wrong. MLB ranked him #8 today. Who would you want over Skenes considering contract control? Wake up. He’s legit right now.

He was just asking a question. I don’t follow baseball either and many of the answers gave us non baseball guys great perspective on Skenes and pitching in the major leagues.

So he’s not top 5 yet? Got it.

There’s quite a few of us that don’t follow it as close as others but still know a lot! Why don’t you ask us also?
