I think they would, if it happens, this time around. Memphis settled on Pastner, because no one wanted to follow Calipari.

Concerning his recruiting, he can pull the Houston area better than any coach in the country, especially if he's at a school that's only 4 hours away. He used to coach the top AAU team in Houston (when he was 16) and still has ties all around the state. I went to high school with him though so I may be biased.

Ehh, Pastner has never beaten a top 25 team. Ever. Think about that. Never beaten a top 25 team. That's with a roster that regularly starts multiple McDonalds All Americans. (most of whom came from the city, and grew up Tiger Fans) FWIW those guys aren't switching to LSU because Pastner is there. Even his big recruit this year Shaw Goodwin, though from Atlanta, played for the Memphis YMCA AAU team.
This is a somewhat intellectually dishonest argument. True, he has never beaten a team currently ranked in the top 25. But he beat Xavier this year, when they were not ranked, but they were ranked for most of the year before and after, then went to the Sweet 16. Also, in three years, he's only played 11 top 25 teams (mostly at the beginning of the season, and not favored in any of them), so there's not a huge sample size, either.
quote:

Every Memphis fan I know is already sick of him. He's relied on nothing more than playing in a terrible conference to reach the tournament.
I'm maybe the biggest Memphis fan on this board, and I'm not sick of him. Neither is any of my family who have been holding season tickets since you could still smoke inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse (and one of whom has worked for the basketball program for a couple of decades). The general consensus I have found is that people are still not completely sold but not ready to run him out yet, either (very up and down, every game a referendum, it's quite maddening actually).
quote:

And the similiar to TJ part, refers to the fact that he probably would be fired within the next two years anyway.
Disagree. If he doesn't start winning NCAA games in the next two years, he may be fired. But I happen to believe he will start winning them.
quote:

He just hasn't been impressive. If his seat wasn't hot, he wouldn't be looking.
There are plenty of reasons he might be *wink-wink* "looking," the most likely of which is that he is using it to get more money from FredEx.

As I posted yesterday, any program that hires Pastner has to do so with the understanding that he's really young and inexperienced, but also really, really promising; and that they will have to be patient and grow with him. IF he left Memphis to come to LSU, I would also be concerned that he is merely waiting for the next better opportunity again.

Looking at his resume, I think this would be a solid hire, coached under Olson and Calapari, took Memphis to the tourney last 2 years, very young, sign him up. Johnny Jones doesn't appeal to me

This would be a homerun hire without a doubt. He has publicly said there has been no contact. I kind of think he is the guy we hire at this point, just a hunch though.

LSU is also rumored to be considering a few “long-shot” candidates, coaches who are more national names at this point, but people that the Tigers may make tell them “no” before moving on.

IT'S LIKE THEY READ THIS SITE AND JUST WANT TO APPEASE US

Pastner would be a great step in the right direction. I'd love to see him hired here!

I think those guys were/are Dixon and Smart. I think Pastner was always behind them on the list and he will actually take the job. Think he feels similar to how Trent felt here, that there is part of the fan base that doesn't like him and never will unless he wins it all.

Josh's situation is too good at Memphis to consider LSU. He has everything he needs at Memphis: facilities, recruiting budget, best strength coach/Life Changer in the country (sorry Frank!), a passionate fan base, and a legit conference to play in (Big East 2013). Josh is probably seeing if he leverage Memphis for a better deal by using the LSU job. As good a history as LSU has I could not see him leaving unless they offered him an insane deal (Although I never thought Saban would go to the NFL from LSU either). He is THE MAN at Memphis right now and he would not be at LSU.

I'd just as soon see JJ get the job as the Memphis coach. Not impressed.

Josh is still an unknown at this point. Memphis took a risk hiring him when they did but they did not have any other viable options. The man can recruit, but he is 0-10 in top 25 games and 0-2 in NCAA tourney games. He has benefited from a weak conference to get 75 wins in 3 years. Not that I want Josh to go but wherever he goes, he needs to start winning games that matter.

Johnny Jones would be nothing but a huge puppet.

Well, we just want a coach that can consistently win games against mediocre SEC teams and make the NCAA tournament on a pretty regular basis. Memphis's expectations are much higher because Calipari spoiled you.

Agree he is unknown, and he has certainly been forced to learn things most coaches learn while they are assistants. But he appears to have the recruiting part down, which is probably the hardest part to master of being a HC.

No, Memphis had a legit program before Cal. There was negative sentiment his first few years before the incredible run from 06-09. Memphis has been to 3 Final Fours and 24 tourney appearances and people live and breath Memphis Basketball all year round. Memphis has had winners before Cal and they will after Cal. If Paster will coach one of those remains to be seen.

I have no idea why anybody would want Pastner.

He can't run a locker room, he runs no offense, his teams look like they're playing an AAU game(no defense and always looking for a big dunk instead of good shots).

B I N G O

Pastner constantly looks like he's about to lose the team. His all-everything point guard took a mid-season vacation and almost quit the team because of Pastner's stupidity. All of his players are confused and frustrated.

Why are people falling for the hype on this guy? In fact, why is there any hype on him at all? He has just about killed Memphis' basketball program. They're riding on hope and fumes right now.
