On the heels of Calipari, and the greatest run of Memphis Tiger basketball ever.

he's young, and no doubt he'll get better. But I don't think it's a home run hire by any means. Maybe at LSU he can focus on recruiting quality kids, instead of inner city ballers that don't respect him.

Just not convinced he's a home run hire for anyone. Appears to be the nicest guy in the sport though.

Can you go into more details about how basketball recruiting is different? I've never followed basketball recruiting.

Pastner has had to recruit most of his own guys as soon as cal left and had his recruits from the 2009 recruiting class follow him to UK.

like I said, take all the Memphis products out of the equation, and even the kids affiliated with Memphis (Goodwin and Barton - Memphis AAU), and he's been a pretty averagee recruiter.

He was going to miss out on the top three memphis products next year too. JW3, Austin Nichols, and Nick King are all looking to leave the city. Nichols for sure(Duke/Tenn/UNC) everyone is thinking Duke. JW3 is dreaming wildcat blue. Nick King may stay in town.

Calipari gutted the Memphis recruiting class on his way out the door. It was Pastner's team pretty damn quick.

Does Baton Rouge have 4-5 top 150 players every year, that won't consider anyone but the hometown team.

Stanley Jacobs from the board's athletics committee chairman:

quote:

"We'll pay whatever the competitive rate is, but we have to find the unique good coach who is a good fit," Jacobs said. "You have to figure out a way to have a relationship with the high school coaches, the AAU coaches and at the same time maintain a program of integrity."

If there's anyone's opinion concerning Memphis basketball that I value, it's a Tennessee fan. I also have a go-to Louisville fan for all my UK info.

Doesn't Pastner have deep ties in the Texas AAU community?

Also isn't the McDonalds AA he signed this year from out of state?

Unlike football where kids are evaluated based on their performance on high school teams, basketball recruiting really focuses around AAU teams and tournaments throughout the year and summer.

Normally, these teams are sponsored by a shoe company, such as Nike and Reebok, and coached by third parties.

Often times, these coaches attempted to sway kids' decisions to schools based on how sweet a deal these schools are willing to give a coach. For instance, Scott Drew hired John Wall's AAU coach a few years ago to his staff, hoping that Wall would follow.

Now, I want to be clear: I'm not advocating that LSU cheat. But when EVERY coach in the nation, including Coach K, Boeheim, Bill Self, actively participates in recruiting at these AAU tournaments and camps, then cheating probably isn't the right word. Some coaches push the envelope more than others. Some are willing to take greater risks and hire AAU coaches or an "advisor" in an attempt to gain an advantage with a kid.

At the end of the day, when recruiting a high-school kid, you are going to come across someone who "handles" or "advises" them. It is almost universal at this point. The issue then becomes how you deal with it. Is talking and placating that guy a problem? Not in my mind. Is promising to give a job one? Probably so and the NCAA has cracked down on that.

LSU, it appears, is taking the approach that anyone or anything associated with an AAU team, coach, player, etc. is a bad thing. Problem is, if you don't engage, you don't get the kids and you don't win.

Pastner's father (I think) is a HC of some AAU team.

All the ones he previously landed were when Memphis was a national brand. They lost that status pretty quickly.

Nichols is a suburb white boy, who doesn't fit in that locker room. JW3 could sign with Memphis, if Cal passes. King could as well, but it wouldn't have much to do with Pastner as it would staying close to his home.

If you asked me to bet, I'd say none of them are tigers, regardless of their coach. But who knows in recruiting.

As a person who's lived in Memphis, roomed with Memphis fans, goes to Memphis games. I'm just saying, this wouldn't thrill me to death.

I'd take him over TJ though.

Played for Memphis YMCA AAU. Actually a year up a while too, with Adonis Thomas.

True, but don't forget in that first season, Cal basically gutted the recruiting class when he left. He still came in and did a hell of a bunch of freshman and only 6 returning players.

AAU has some bad elements, just as there are bad high school coaches. It's not universally bad and many of the coaches are volunteers truly trying to help people. My son plays AAU now and I am involved in it. It gets much worse of a rap than it deserves.

AAU =\= cheating or unethical.

Generally, the players spend more time with their AAU coaches, so they develop a trust with them.

I think he also coached one of the teams his dad ran when he was 16 or so.

Exactly.

Some people seem to understand that in the AD, but a very important group doesn't. I think people can pretty much read between the lines there. It's a question of who wins out at this point.

Agree with a lot you said. He's not a homerun hire but an upgrade on TJ so maybe it's for the best if we cant get Drew. Memphis fan's probably wouldnt be too sad to see them go if they could land a big name.

but it's all moot more than likely because brod says pastner was just using the lsu gig to get a raise at memphis and never had any real interest in coming here.
