This is how the LSU teams of the late 80s, early 90s operated. Mike Archer and Curley Hallman look them up. There was a lack of talent, experience and they were poorly coached. The only difference between then and now is that we have had so many injuries today. Archer and Hallman just could not recruit talent.

The last 20 years have spoiled us on LSU football, dark days ahead, but we will rise again.

Agreed and destroyed the Les Miles physicality as part of that.

I know now that if not for Joe Burrow being tough as nails, that 2019 team was really mimicking him, not O.

This is what surprised me the most. O's teams are soft. As an ex DLine coach, I find that unimaginable.

The remainder of this season is going to suck but with a solid hire LSU is back to 2 in the West next year.

Arnsparger was largely to blame for the lack of talent starting in the late 80s. Good coach, but not a recruiter.

Hallman left pretty good talent here for Dinardo to start with.

Nah. LSU's profile has been raised too high for it to go back to the old days (which I vividly remember).

I have another question:

Is it possible that O was actually at least quasi-competent in 2018/9 and really just has gotten worse for whatever reason since then?

Disagree with the first point. Archer when 10-1-1 and 8-4 in his first two years with Arnsparger’s players. Hallman did not recruit that poorly. He had the number 1 class in 1992. His last year in 1994, LSU had 8 or 9 starters that spent time in the NFL. Maybe more. It was a team that had some talent. Hallman was just an awful coach. They were 1-1 going into the Auburn game which they led 23-9 in the 4th. We know what happened after that. Everything unraveled after that game. Who knows what would have happened had they won that game. They were definitely talented enough to be a 7 or 8 win team. Instead, it was 4-7 and Hallman was history.

Arnsparger was here 3 years. The guy before him, Stovall, was a good recruiter.

Arnsparger handed a wealth of talent to Archer. Go look up Arnsparger recruiting classes. Lots of great names in those 84-86 classes.

Archer was the real death knell. Terrible recruiter and program leader. Knew defensive X and O's, was meant to be a career DC.

Hallman was a good recruiter, just a terrible coach.

Yeah when Hudson Hallman was hired I remember the big push for him was that he was supposed to be especially good at relating to and recruiting the black scholar-athlete. I guess he just couldn't teach them anything once he got them here.
