Truth is Saban is a better coach than Miles and it's not even close.

I hated it when Saban went to Alabama because I knew he would turn the program into what is is now. That could have been LSU.

Bama will win several more national championships before Saban leaves.

So yea, Saban once being LSU's coach, and now Bama's, and now dominating the college football world does make it sting just a tad more.

No shame in that.

Doesn't change the FACT that saban is dick and Les Miles isn't. I don't want a dick for a coach.

All he had to do was play Jarret Lee for a couple of series in the BCS to see if he could get things going. If that would have happened, I don't think you'd have as much complaining today.

It's a combination of factors:

The handling of the QB situation
The refusal to adjust in the BCS title game
Loss of the top recruits in state to out of state schools
Ability to communicate - when we are winning its cute/evil genius, but when we lose its stupidity

Losing the game and recruits to Saban certainly does not help, but had Miles taken the team down in a similar fashion against OK State, the deep resentment and bewilderment that exists today would have remained regardless of the opponent.

Exactly! And there's nothing wrong with being pissed that a school who did a lot to give Saban his opportunity at first real success is repaid by his targeting the state of Louisiana's best players. Yeah, another coach would do the same, but there is NOTHING WRONG with hating Saban for obviously making it a priority for him. I'm convinced it's as much about assuring LSU doesn't get them as it is for him to get them. That makes it more than just business.

The Jan 9th game was worse than a loss.

La Tech ULALA, ULM, NWSt, Millsaps or McNeese would have given Bama a better game than we did.

We looked like a team without talent, without heart and without a will to win

That is all coaching. The team that beat Oregon
would have made it a game. I will go on to say, I think the LSU got worse as the season progressed.
bama got better. Oregon was our best effort.

I think what frosts our behinds is that while it may be true that the LSU football program is in the best condition it's ever been we still can't be better than bama, or at least that's everyone's perception, and yes it doesn't help that saban is their coach. There are plenty of reasons for LSU fans to be upset. We absolutely blew our chance to have the best season ever with an absolutely horribly, inexcusably bad game plan and execution and to top it off follow all that up with a mediocre at best recruiting performance to give the doubters of our future even more concern. Let's not fool ourselves, the kind of success that this team just experienced this year can be very fleeting and with good reason LSU fans fear our time of brilliance may be waning. Our dominance is becoming less so. It doesn't take long for things to turn south. All it takes is a little bad luck, an injury or two and a potentially promising 12-0 season can turn to 8-5 or 7-6 very quickly. How this team responds and competes this season will tell us a lot about the direction of the program.

This year, I had begun to believe in Miles. I know; the man has won throughout his tenure here but the Tenn game in 05, the Ole Miss clock debacle, &
Tenn game in 10 made me wonder. This year, beating as many ranked teams as he did.. you couldn't deny the success. Until the NC game.

I don't think LSU would have won regardless BUT, anyone watching that game could see that Jefferson was toast. Try another QB. I lost a lot of respect for Miles with the way he handled JL. That kid bailed Miles out this year.. and then, when Miles golden boy returns.. at the first opportunity he had, golden boy goes back in. It wasn't right. Based on that, I don't blame the kid from Indiana from going to ND.

In recruiting.. we might as well accept the fact that as long as Saban is at Bama he's going to pick off a few recruits every year.

I don't want Saban. Despite my reservations I wanted Miles to win and get over the hump, prove himself as LSU's greatest coach. He coulnd't do it, because he isn't. I may be wrong, but I think we may be heading for slide in production. I think within the next 2 to 3 years Miles will be gone. Why? There comes a point when not reaching your potential year after year becomes detrimental to the team and its psyche. Sure, we are light years from where we were in the 90's, but what does that really mean? To be the best we should aspire to be that and set the bar accordingly. If Miles rebounds and wins out next year, maybe that could redeem him for the debacle this year. However, if he fails, I just see that as the beginning of the end for him.

Well if your concerns prove to be prophetic, and *CLM is entering the twilight of his tenure, let's hope that there's a repeat of what happened when Saban left. We got Miles and his w/l record since speaks for itself. In his own style of coaching, *CLM has been able to build on, or at least mostly maintain, the winning foundation Saban laid at LSU.

So if *CLM goes, can LSU find a coach who can not only maintain, but again build on the foundation of his two very successful predecessors? I think it would be very possible. Not that I want *CLM gone. What I really want (and do still believe is possible... maybe) is for him to prove himself to be LSU's greatest coach ever and redeem this bitter loss of 1/9.

Disagree. LSU stayed strong - the regression started when *CLM decided to reinstate the previous two years' starter, at the expense of the 2011 starter having any playing time in every game, after the first Alabama game.

The 312 - No apologies needed for your length of post. It's obvious to me that you are a true LSU fan.

Re. your post - Blam, dead center, Ping, Nail!!!

Specifics. No. I enjoy reading the posts of other people that I consider to be up front with what our entire LSU Tiger team of players/coaches displayed on 1/9/12.

I've stated my feelings previously (1/16/12):

quote:

What was so utterly surreal to me was that I kept watching the 2nd half expecting to see Jarrett Lee trot onto the field in the next series, yet knowing all the while that was never, ever going to happen.

Wow. I watched all 35 bowl games. I mean I watched all of them (some were replays, especially some of the numerous games played around noon on 1/2/12). Nonetheless, I watched them all since I was in the TD College Bowl Pick'em contest and I was very interested in their outcomes. None of the other games featured such a dismal performance at the primary offense position of QB.

Furthermore, no other substitution for this QB with this dismal performance ever materialized from our LSU coaches. As stated above - surreal. I knew a substitution at QB wasn't going to happen, yet I kept expecting a change to be made. I know, I know - this is the definition of insanity.

This is my first post since the disappointing loss last Monday. I think most people (like myself) are very close to being at (or they are actually at) stage 5 of the Kubler-Ross model of dealing with loss: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. Guilbeau may still be at stage 3. Nonetheless, this is a well written article by Guilbeau - make no mistake about that. Guilbeau, great job. Good article. Spot on. Good article. Spot on. I somehow know that, deep down, Guilbeau is an LSU fan.

Surreal... Miles - to quote the Eagles:

"You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes"

Whatever. Nearing acceptance stage I will say Miles is my coach and I hope he learns something from this episode of "not trying all options despite feeling in your gut that only one option is viable"...

Coach Miles - you did well with your 13-1 record this year. Let's improve on that next year.
