There is not a system that someone could not shoot a hole in it.
Even in the NCAA B Ball Tournament, you could argua that the team that wins is the team that has the best run, as opposed to the ACTUAL best.
But, at some point, you have to decide the system and go with it.
Right know, only 2 teams can be in the picture regarding the football championship...
as a result, it is a very NARROW picture, as only 2 teams will participate and ARE DECIDED BY A COMPUTER AND A POLL.
IMO, the more teams the more accurate the results will be.
thus
4 is better than 2
8 is better than 4 and so on...
but these must be balanced with Bowl Game and other interest THAT ARE REAL.
therefore, although not perfect, I think a + 1 would be the best INITIAL system to use.
i,e 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3 and the winner does the +1.
will this be perfect, NO.
but by involving 4 teams, you have now increased the number of teams going for the championship by 100%.

Hmmmmm
2007
2004
2003
2001
2000
1999
1998
All controversial.
You could probably throw 2006 in there because of Michigan. So you are left with.....2002 and 2005 as the only two years.
So basically, the BCS only works when you get two and only two unbeaten teams from the major conferences.
Yeah....that rarely works out. You are wrong. A playoff is better.
So

Lol, every year except for maybe 03 and 04. Way more than the NFL has.
What sport have you been watching since 1998? There has been controversy in every year where there weren't two unbeaten teams. Period.

It's kind of a push for me, I like how the BCS takes into account the entire regular season, which makes it more meaningful then any other regular season in sports, but teams can do everything they can and still get left out of the BCS (Auburn 04) ..... With playoffs all deserving teams would get a shot...and no one should be bitching about being left out, even though there would be tons of bitching from teams that were left out..

I would have a lot less sympathy for a #9 team that got left out of an 8 team playoff than a #3 team that got left out of the BCSNCG, that is for sure.

Do you realize that the SuperBowl rarely has the 2 #1 seeds playing in it?
Playoffs are better if you want teams that couldn't win their divison as the champions.

If the top two seeds lost they don't have an argument, do they?

And the BCS is perfect for excluding teams that did everything right (Auburn 04, Texas 08).

Do you really believe the NY Giants were the best team in the NFL last year?

No system is perfect. But, IMHO, a playoff would be closer to perfect than the BCS.

Yes.

At the end of the year...yes. They beat the two teams considered to be the best (Dallas, NE)...so yes, they were.
Posted on 12/23/08 at 3:57 pm to TxTiger82
This begs the question...would you have preferred that Dallas and New England simply got invited to a championship...knowing what you know in retrospect?

Yes, they beat every team they had to in order to get to the championship. Especially since they were a wild card and made it all the way. So they DESERVED to be the Champions. Nobody just mythically awarded them a preseason #1 ranking that they just had to run through some horseshite conference (like the Pac-10) and go to the championship. They won the super bowl, so they have a better reason to call themselves champions then if a west coast bias had them perched there and waiting before the season started.

I honestly can't understand why an LSU fan would not want a playoff. There would be an SEC team in the championship every other year.

I truly believe that LSU would have won a playoff in 2006. I also believe we might have come close in 2005, although I will admit that USC and Texas were both freakin badass that year.

im so sick of this shite. why are we looking to crown the best team? the patriots were the best team last year by a mile but they got outplayed in the super bowl. we aren't looking for the best team. if the "best team" plays a shitty game in the playoffs they don't deserve to be champions. thats why we play the fricking game. was boise state a better team than ou? frick no. get a playoff and whoever wins wins. they are the champ. stop looking for the "best" team because it will never be found or agreed upon. we need a fair way to find a champion.

I am always a little amused by this question. Who cares? A playoff determines the champion and does so on the field. does the best team always win? of course, not. leave it to the barrooms and chat rooms to talk about who the "best team" really was, but let the champion be decided on the field in an actual game.
