Football off week is here so there is no better time to comment on the ending fall softball period.

I was able to make every fall home game and this is one opinion on how it played out.

To start, Beth has one unbelievable pitching staff. They are simply the best in the USA. To put into perspective for the baseball followers, she has put together a staff that would probably have 3 first round picks if softball had the same set up as the baseball draft. Then, the 4th, the freshman is going to be terrific. She just needs innings to polish up. Hoover, Wali and Smith have to be one of the best triple threats in college softball history. Kudos to the coaches on being able to get them on the same staff.

Position player roles have seen significant upgrades. This freshman class is as advertised and offers a totally different talent level than previous classes. The coaching staff has brought in better players every single year they have been on the recruiting trail but this class may be hard to top.

I would think only two upper class position players (jrs. srs.) should get any significant playing time based on talent and games I've seen (other than maybe DP). This team could take the sophs and freshman add Landry and Jaquish and in my opinion be the best team that Beth and staff have had. The explosiveness and speed that some of the youngsters bring to the field is at a completely different level than the previous classes.

If the staff will follow OU's lead and go on a youth movement this team could be special for a few years. They will have a few growing pains at first and they will make some head scratching mistakes but when these players have a few games under their belts the sky is the absolute limit. With the exception of Landry and Jaquish, I don't see one upper classman that is a game changer like these freshman. Even though a few of the newbies seem to be playing scared and are a bit timid they are still so superior in upside. All are already at least equal with the upper classmen which makes it a no brainer to play the youth.

It's going to be a great year in Tiger Park!

Yes, with coach dobson improving the hitting continuously since he has been here and with this being the 3rd year Carli and Alie are together there is no reason to finally not win a WCWS. 3rd time the charm.

So far it has been a freshman Doyle at third and a freshman Springfield/Thornhill at first when Jaquish catches. When the freshman Cunningham catches and Jaquish move to third, Doyle has moved to first.

The outfield has been more puzzling to me. Andrews and Griggs have been sharing time in CF. Landry has locked down RF and freshman Weinberger and Thornhill have spent most of the time in left. I am very surprised that Griggs is seeing any time in CF and hasn't been moved to LF. I am also surprised that Dawson hasn't taken one ball in the outfield. I couldn't imagine the defensive range of a Landry, Andrews, Dawson outfield!

The schedule isn't on LSUsports.net yet. If it's been released elsewhere, I haven't seen it.

Looking forward to the season though, sounds like we've got a great group this year.

ETA: Just checked the LSU softball Twitter, the schedule is out for the early season tournaments. Full schedule still not out, though.

Torina may be our best HC-Manager on the whole LSU Sports Staff...she is stable, consistent and dogged in her work ethic.

When Torina was chosen, I was ecstatic that Murphy and Habetz left LSU. I thought they were a VERY BAD FIT and so much more than can be politely discussed. They showed their lack of class and they were "hand-picked" by Mz. Yvette Girouard.

Aleva deftly selected Torina, on the rise, presumably at the urging or recommendation of Yvette Girouard. That's fine and Torina has created a dust vortez, totally obscuring all that is behind her in LSU Softball History.

Torina is at LSU, hungry and motivated. She was an All SEC player and All Academic. She is the consummate professional. She contributes to LSU's image IN A VERY POSITIVE MANNER. The nation and Softball Community hold Beth Torina in the highest of esteem. I hope she remains at LSU all her career, she would be a great AD, honest and very competitive.

Any LSU fan that has not made a trip to Tiger Park is missing one of the best live sports on campus. Beth and staff have a high level product we should all be proud of.

I agree with the post but the question is will the staff be able to pull away from the comfort level of playing some of the older players who are definitely inferior but more familiar. Some of them have been below average or even worse in their careers but still look like they may be in line for the first shot.

I am one that believes if the younger player is close to the veteran on arrival then they play. If a 3rd or 4th year player cannot emphatically separate themselves from an incoming freshman or a sophomore then they have lost the job. You cannot build a program with juniors and seniors. It should be a very fun year to see how it goes.

Second base only. It's been a bit strange to me the way they have dealt with her. But anyone that has kept up with the softball board knows I believe Dawson is the best player I have ever seen on the high school/travel ball level.

She has been given no opportunity that I have seen to lead off even though she is statistically the greatest pre-college leadoff hitter ever. So far, Andrews has been given the lead off opportunities and has done well. I have watched Dawson for years and she is the type of player you pencil in the line up and get out of the way and she will make more dynamic wow plays than anyone you will ever see.

It should be interesting to see how it plays out but I sure would like to see her have a shot at the top of the order. Dawson and Andrews are absolute hell to deal with for a defense but they are very different offensively. Andrews is solely a touch and go with no ability to drive the ball or really hit it out of the infield. Dawson will hit doubles, triples and balls out of the park as well as play touch and go when necessary. The pressure these two put on the defense is massive. Dawson, Andrews, Landry, Jaquish would be one fierce front 4 with the first three being able to fly on the bases.

Thanks for the report, I enjoy seeing the softball ladies do well. Beth Torina is a very good coach and LSU is lucky to have her.

Always great to see any and all teams at LSU doing well.

Not sure who you rank 1 and 2 but presume football is #1.

The # 2 is clearly gymnastics which came within an eyelash of a national championship last year. As Bum Phillips said, " we knocked on the door this year and next year we gonna kick that sumbitch in."

Gymnastics is now a happening in Baton Rouge with sellout crowds , over 14,000 roaring fans and a high flying dazzling group with more swagger than you can imagine in those diminutive bodies.

Softball is very close and both teams represent the university with class an dignity and always come to play. Kudos to the dean of gymnastics coaches and the best up and coming softball coach in the country. Don't be surprised if there are two more national titles in the showcase by this spring.

Best live sports on campus

1. Tiger Stadium football
2 (tie) Gymnastics at the PMAC and Tiger Park.

I was an ardent baseball fan until I understood and watched the softball product. The speed of the game and the ability of the athletes puts baseball to shame in my very humble opinion. If both baseball and softball are playing at the same time I will pick softball every time.

Geaux Tigers!!

No question and the PMAC does not empty during the fourth rotation. Those athletes can put on some electrifying performances.

We need all of that same energy in the stadium for four quarters this Saturday. We crushed the Gump Girls now lets do it in Tiger Stadium.
