In fairness to what? There are back judges, line judges, head linesman, side judges, umpires, referees....

There is bound to be a couple of "refs" following the play...at least TWO for sure. The side judges have to follow the play and be ready to mark the ball at the proper place. So if that was a fake side judge...was he prepared to mark the ball?

Nice that the "fake" ref's first impulse after seeing the TD isn't to jump up and down or cheer, he runs out into the end zone and signals a touchdown.

To respond more directly to what you were insinuating...which is that it could have been the ref running down the middle of the field that was interviewed and not the side judge...

...Ill just ask you this. If you are reporter X and you wanted to interview a ref running with Cannon to get their perspective...would you interview the one that could almost touch him (sideline judge/fake ref) or the guy 15 yards or so from him?

The NFL added the line judge in 1965 and side judge in 1978. I doubt college football had more refs than the NFL did in the 50's.

I dont care what the names of the refs were in '59...but I know there were refs on the line of scrimmage along with refs in the offensive and defensive backfield. But it doesnt change the fact that the so called fake ref was about to mark the ball when it looked like Cannon was gonna be brought down. This whole story is silly.

Who knows if it is fake, but when Cannon gets to the 20 it sure does look like a ref come from the sideline. A lot of the facts seem in line, who knows. Cool story either way

Cannon said on Songy's show that ref following him down the sideline had been calling the game.

I just wonder if they are talkingabout the guy in the dark coat that runs up along side of cannon forthe last 30 yards or so. The article never actually points to that ref Does it?

We were in Hooters one night with Billy (Not what you think), it was an awards banquet with Lee Brekeen. A great guy to get stories from, NFL were some of the best. He also follows recruiting more than just about anyone on here. He was my wifes orthodontist, thats why she has such a great smile, oh and eats well......

Anyway, does anyone remember the Ole Miss baseball coach when Skip was in his early years at LSU? Jake Gibbs.

According to "Greatest Moments in LSU Football History" is appears that Rogers was on the field and signaled the TD but not the one running with him, Sam King was:

I believe it. The original article about this fake referee appeared in the Clarion-Ledger Newspaper, Jackson, Ms. on November 11th, 1995. That was almost 14 years ago.

Although we may have never heard it, someone would have debunked it by now.

I loved it!

Too many holes in the guys story. This video points out some of the flaws

LINK

1) At the coint toss, only 5 refs are in the crew. During the punt portion of the video only 2 are shown on that side of the field. Then during the run there are still only 2 on that side of the field. Highly unlikely for one of the real refs to run clear out of camera range on that side.

2) The video shows the entire side of the Ole Miss field during the punt and the return. No ref in white pants is seen "waiting" on the Ole Miss to go in.

3) Why did he suddenly run out on the field on that particular play, especially when it looked like Cannon would be tackled? Did he have ESP, and know it would be a play for the ages?

4) What did the fake ref do after the TD? Go sit back down? There was still 10 minutes left in the game? The real ref (who ran with him and also signaled a TD) would have had him tossed at that point.

Gotta raise the bullshite flag on that one. A single re-watching of the film proves it's not true. However, the REAL story is that the official runs 89 yrs pretty much stride for stride wit Cannon.

Yes it is a great story whether true or not.

Maybe Bill Rogers was behind the grassy knoll near the 5 yard line.
