Now if you could show that for the past 10 years Bama was the least penalized team in the SEC year after year you might have something.
Ok. How about this: LINK?
Always in the top 3 least penalized even with an extra game included many years. I'll break down some of the data and get stats from just SEC games as well.

The fact that Peterson got three steps in-bounds on his interception, and the replay offical refused to over-turn the call says it all.
The ball spots on third downs in that game were as bias as it gets.
As long as the SEC maximizes revenues, no one will rock the boat.
Who wins or loses is considered irrelevant by the powers that be, as long as the money keeps rolling in, so you might as well get use to it.

This thread may be on to something. I'm eager to see what some of the statisticians on the board can come up with.

Bama went 10 games without a holding penalty a few years ago. No further research needed.

What a great thread! I've always felt that this was happening and now we've got some numbers to verify it.
What is also interesting is the number of LSU people who've left comments on here denying the numbers meaning...guess there are always flat earthers out there.

Impressive! Do you use Kentucky windage?

So, so far we have:
- A 10 year comparison between Alabama and LSU with significant changes in important variables (coaching) showing a near statistically impossible result of Bama being the least penalized team every single year.
- Stats in the above link showing that over the last 5 years Alabama has been the least penalized team in the conference 3 of those years, and at least Top 3 in least penalized the other 2 years. Perhaps Saban is just better at instilling discipline, right?
- An average rank of 65.5 nationally in penalties per game for LSU under Saban. An average rank of 11 nationally in penalties/game for Bama under Saban.
- Strong ties to the University of Alabama or surrounding communities by a number of SEC officials.
To be fair, LSU's national average rank in penalties/game under Miles has been 88.1 since he's been here. We only have 2 years of data for Saban, it would be nice if we had his numbers since he's been a head coach. Based on the data we have, it appears Saban's teams are more disciplined, but that doesn't explain the discrepancy between his time here and at Alabama. You would have to assume #1) that Shula's teams had more discipline than Saban's LSU teams and #2) that Saban suddenly became a more discipline oriented coach when he arrived at Alabama. Doubtful.
Based on what we have, I think personally that the SEC officials are biased in favor of Alabama, even if it is an unconscious bias on the field during the heat of the game. Officials could use this data, assuming they are in it for the best interest of the sport, to become better at their jobs. Everyone has bias. I know it would be harder for me to reach in my pocket and call back a big touchdown run on a holding call if it was against LSU. So I give them the benefit of the doubt, it is most likely unconscious bias. But the numbers show that there is indeed a bias there. Doesn't have to be black helicopters to those suggesting we are nuts for even questioning it.

For perspective, here are their stats over the last decade. Alabama was only in the bottom half of "penalties/penalty yards against" once in the past 10 seasons (7/12 in 2005).
Penalties per game (SEC rank), penalty yards per game
2003: 6.1 (5), 50.5 (4)
2004: 5.5 (2), 48.2 (5)
2005: 6.2 (7), 46.8 (6)
2006: 6.0 (6), 42.8 (4)
2007: 4.5 (1), 34.2 (1)
2008: 4.1 (1), 37.1 (2)
2009: 4.9 (3), 41.3 (4)
2010: 5.2 (3), 39.2 (1)
2011: 3.8 (1), 33.5 (1)
2012: 4.1 (1), 34.3 (1)

So what exactly makes a conspiacy more likely than a trend of discipline?
You can be an average football player and a disciplined football player at the same time. This is getting a little ridiculous, as many have already pointed out. The sooner y'all enjoy and savor what's transpiring in baton rouge as opposed to steaming about what's going on in tuscaloosa, the happier everryone will be

I didn't make a judgment on it. I just posted the facts. People can decide for themselves whether they think there's bias involved.
Posted on 12/5/12 at 10:25 am to Riseupfromtherubble
There is a conflict of interest and LSU fans are not 'whining' here. The SEC offices in B'ham would not be an issue if it were not for the UAT employees who reside over officiating and scheduling that have demonstrated bias. The data in this thread leans to the proof of the conflict.
This is not allowed in any current business demonstrating integrity.

The fact that the discipline variable is accounted for. The same coach has coached at both schools. Theoretically, when Saban was at LSU, LSU should have shown the discipline that Alabama has. That wasn't the case. The trend has remained the same under different coaches and players, and even the same coach at each school.
ETA: And evidence of a bias DOES NOT mean evidence of a conspiracy. There can be bias without a conspiracy.

Are you suggesting there is some sort of discipline ethic at BAMA that survives from coach to coach...and a lack of discipline ethic that survives at LSU from coach to coach?
If Saban's LSU teams would have been equally, or even in the same ballpark, as less penalized as his BAMA squads I'd tend to agree with you...but they weren't. Much the same way the SEC told him to go piss up a rope when he complained about playing Arky the day after Thanksgiving every year, but IMMEDIATELY reversed their decision to move the Iron Bowl to that day when Nick threw a hissy fit about it...I think being BAMA seems to carry weight.
