This was true in 2003 because the "BCS System" was an actual system with strength of schedule and quality wins as a separate component in the formula along with computer ratings and human poll votes. The system could not be as easily manipulated by the voters and that is what created the outrage. Today, in 2011 the "BCS System" is back to being a popular vote. Quality wins and body of work mean little if your name is OSU. Everyone talks about Bama passing the eyeball test but lots of teams could pass the eyeball test playing 3 teams with winning records in FBS play.

The BCS was originally set up to reward teams for playing a tough schedule and we are now back to voting in the most popular girl in school. I would love to see what the BCS standings would look like this year using the 2003 formula that cared less about the name on the uniform and more about what was accomplished on the field.

But remember, in 2003, they were saying this because the media at that time was so sure that LSU was going to lose to UGA in Atlanta, that they were going to get their dream matchup of USC vs Oklahoma.

Remember, LSU won in BR 17-10, but "UGA was clearly the better team".

Does this sound familiar? Yes, it does. 9-6, but "Bama was clearly the better team".

In 2003, as XBengal pointed out, LSU's quality of wins after beating UGA was so impressive, the formula at the time dictated their appearance in the game. When this happened, their darling in Los Angeles (the second largest media market in the US) was left out due to the fact they only played one ranked team all year, or 3 FBS teams with winning records (sound familiar? LOL).

It is important to understand the mindset of the media and their entitled schools and pay attention to history. Those who don't pay attention to history are doomed to repeat it.

So, as stated in the OP, the formuala was changed in 2004 so they could get their precious OU vs USC matchup. Oh, and at the same time give the SEC and podunk undefeated Auburn the finger.
