TOP is an overrated stat

Army and Navy were 1 and 2 in the country

One was 10-3 one was 7-6.

the Records all over the place

Arkansas was #1 in TOP in 2016 and went 7-6.

Go look at scoring Offense. When’s the last time the top scoring offense in the country won less than 10 games?

Winning TOP, which is what Ensminger said, is not overrated. All of the top teams routinely win TOP.

I agree that being at the top of the top leader board doesn't mean much, if anything.

Not a fan of this mentality. It's Miles all over again. Playing afraid..

Scoring TDs is priority.

Ya I get it but it’s number 2 on the priority list? How about move the chains first and worry about clock later

Keeping the other team's offense off the field seems like a sound strategy to me.

Not if we aren't scoring TDs and they are.

I long for the day that LSU scores at will and forgets this whole afraid to turn the ball over.. because the moment you do turn the ball over with this mentality.. it is magnified.

I rather score 4 to 5 tds with a turnover or 2.. than 1 td a fg or two and no turnovers. Of course I prefer no turnovers.. but I like a mentality that a turnover doesn't hinder our ability to come right back out and score TDs..

When Desaun Watson would play, I saw him throw a couple of picks.. and it didn't matter bc Clemson's D was so great and he was able to overcome it by throwing for 5 TDs... that's what I want.. none of this playing so afraid to turn the ball over and trying to just run out as much clock as possible.

This kind of comment reminds me of when Miles said we would throw for 250 yards passing and be balanced.

I hated that quote as well. I don't want some sort o emphases on balance.. I want whatever works in producing TDs.. whatever works against the opponent of the day.. and our ability to be confident, even despite any turnovers.

As long as you are putting up TDs, the other team should be trailing to catch up. Especially against this great D.

I agree sustaining drives is important though. We must do better on 3rd down.

My keys are

Scoring TDs
Redzone offense scoring TDs
Converting 3rd downs

I don't care if auburn has the ball longer trying their best to get a TD.

But that’s just correlation not causation.

The top teams are good at staying on the field and getting off of it, so naturally they are likely to have a better TOP, but there are also teams that focus on scoring and don’t give a shite about TOP and they win games too.

Like I said TOP will take care of itself, but slow offenses rarely win, and a lot of top teams have TOP averaged barely over 50%.

You focus on TOP is you don’t think you can score enough points and want to lean on your defens. Which is fine, but it’s a shitty goal this early in a season.

Completely agree.

Do that, win the turnover battle and be efficient on special teams, we've got a very good shot at beating Auburn.

Keep the defense off the field. Don't need a three and out and have them coming right back out with little rest.

Yeah. I hear you. I'm not impressed so far either. I was pissed about hiring Ensminger, but kind of talked myself into it, or at the very least thought if it was an outright disaster it wouldn't last long.

Now, I'm just kind of sad that it doesn't appear to be working. My posts in this thread are basically me grasping at straws of hope.

I really hope they surprise me and put together a good gamelan this weekend.

making that a priority doesn’t tell me ya wants go 4-5 wide rpo tempo etc.

Do Bama and Georgia, the best teams in America, want to go 4 and 5 wide? Do they tend to dominate TOP?

Lighten up Francis.

Winning the TOP doesn't just mean keeping the ball on the ground all game. It means sustaining drives and not going 3 n out.

Auburn dominated TOP in their two biggest wins last year.

Against Alabama they had the ball over 36 minutes and against Georgia, they had it over 33.

Maybe TOP is a priority for this game because Auburn thrives when they win it.

It's all going to come down to QB play. Also, can our defense get to Stidham? If yes, we'll pull off the upset. Putting up points and taking care of the ball should be our top 2 priorities. I do feel that we have a defensive advantage because Stidham is a sitting duck in the pocket. Am I off-basis here?

You're taking about a difference of 3 minutes and 1.5 minutes. Not exactly dominating.

I would guess every coach in the country would say TOP is a priority. Its just coach speak.

You're not great at math are you?

36 minutes means your opponent had the ball only 24 minutes. That's a 12 minute advantage and is huge.

33 minutes means your opponent had the ball only 27 minutes and is also a really large advantage.
