I worked in a grocery store 50+ years ago. The people that paid from the food stamp book, bought cabbage/collards, a block of lard, a sack of flour, five pound bag of sugar, ham hocks... These people were really poor and would try to give me a quarter for loading it in the back of a rusted out truck.
I hated the fact that that was all they had.
I have been broke many times, but I have never been poor. These people didn't have any "niceties".

If tweet fails to load, click here. Restaurants should not accept EBT to start with. Whenever I'm working in the field and see a corner store with the EBT/SNAP sign it just annoys the hell out of me. Just wasting my money.

We'd have people come in and buy the smallest red potato they could find for like a .05. Then they'd give us a $1 food stamp and we were required to give back any change less than a dollar back in actual currency. So theyd do this 3 or 4 times then buy a six pack with their newfound hoard of coins. Others would buy vanilla extract with their food stamps. Not because they were baking but because its got a pretty high alcohol content. So taxpayers werent buying any of them food they were paying for them to get drunk. And these were healthy adult people, not invalids or the elderly. And dont even get me started on the crab leg situation which only existed in stores that had a lot of welfare queens. Turns out people who have to actually pay for their groceries buy very few crab legs at the grocery store but the queens would stock up every month when they got their handout. And the whole getting into a Cadillac thing is based on reality. Saw them getting into nicer cars than anyone who worked there many times.
