If the ball bounces in front of the catcher, sure. This was great awareness by Serna to just throw to first.
I haven’t rewatched but did Yorke step on the green bag only on that play? If so, is the runner not safe?

No. The green bag can be used if the throwing lane dictates that the first baseman use that bag.
And since the ball didn't bounce directly in front of Serna, as the OP is suggesting, the throwing lane available was best for Yorke to use the green bag.

I got kicked out of a softball game when an umpire said my catcher had to throw to first in this situation. 3 runs score. I told him to go get his rule book or just issue common sense. That along with a few other choice words he didn’t like.

Google says different....
"To put it simply, on a play at first, the defender has to be in contact with the white bag, while the runner takes ownership of the outside bag."
How can you be so certain to answer the question wrong? And we wonder what is wrong with e fanbase.

You right I stopped reading...
On a dropped third strike, the first baseman can use either bag to record the out once he has taken possession of the ball after the throw down from the catcher.
There are two situations its legal. I was wondering why they didnt challenge it. Still holds truth about our fans.

This is off topic but wanted to share how umpires can be so stupid with the rule book and not use common sense.
In a softball game, I rounded third and was headed home when I saw the catcher with the ball waiting to tag me out. So I reversed course and headed back to third base. The umpire immediately called me out for running the bases in “reverse order”. There is a rule about running bases in reverse order making a mockery of the game; I.e. after hitting the ball running from home to third rather than home to first.
Of course, no amount of arguing could change the umpire’s mind. I guess in his mind a runner is also automatically out if he gets caught in a rundown or goes halfway to a bag on a fly ball and retreating if the ball is caught. SMH

I wish someone could replay it . I thought to myself at the time , why didn’t he just step on the plate . But I knew the ball kicked over towards the Tennessee dugout but can’t remember how far .

Want to try that again?
But you are correct. You are what is wrong with the fan base.
You asked a question, and I answered it.
You then go to Google to try to prove me wrong. Read only up to the part you want to believe, and then run back here to prove you were correct. Only to still be wrong.

And then still is delusional enough to think what he said means something.

That’s a great point by the way. It’s the base in front of him with all his momentum going that way and clearly a more natural and routine play for the catcher to make.
Of course we have the advantage of seeing the runner from 3rd was nowhere near home, but if he takes time to turn around and sees a close play for whatever reason then he loses the out at first and home. What if the pitcher had a lapse and didn’t cover home? It was smart to go to first for the reason you listed.
That would be horrible if he turned around to no pitcher covering at home when he could just get the out at first.

Catcher just needs to touch home plate; didn’t need to throw to 1st.

The throw to 1st is almost always the guaranteed out because the runner has to run the entirety of the baseline which gives the catcher more time to react.
Not so fast my friend... never make a throw you dont have to in order to end the inning.

I guess we are all just going to have our own opinion. Which is kinda how life goes.
