re: Draft Express new scouting evaluation on Simmons

Fair or unfair to him, Simmons came into this season with the hype of a LeBron or Kobe type player. What we got was not on the level of that hype. Again, Simmons did not hype himself and I don't blame him. He had a lot of great skills you do not see in players today, including unselfish play, passing and dribbling skills. But he has absolutely the worst shot of any player I have ever seen at any level in basketball. And that is a huge problem if he never develops one.

That seems a bit hyperbolic.

It was for dramatic effect. I will narrow it down a bit further. I have followed LSU basketball all my life and not one player that I have watched in my 41 years has had a worse shot than Simmons. So if I limit it to past LSU players, it still holds true.

Elbert Robertson? Darcy Malone? Ben Voogd? Shaq?

He doesn't even have the worst shooting form on this LSU team. You are just talking out of your arse

From what I saw of him where he took an outside shot this year, yes, yes, yes and yes.
Simmons shoots free throws better than Shaq did. But that isn't saying much. Talking about straight jump shots.

Simmons was a horrible perimieter defender also, he got beat for threes, and lay-ups consistently when guarding the perimeter. Those little guys burned him.
He doesnt move his feet at all, and is late.

Simmons undoubtably needs to improve his jumper and I imagine he will, but even as it is now if you would rather rely on Elbert Robinson or Shaq to hit a jumper than Ben, I really don't even know what to say to that.

Add Tim Quarterman's freshman year.
I've been critical of Simmons for not being aggressive enough at times. That said the dude led LSU in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blks. That's a far cry from the bust some here try and insinuate.

I think it'll be a few years before Ben avg more than 15ppg in the NBA.

It's amazing how many people on this site basically hate Simmons.

People like you need to stop it. He was better than Martin or Mickey. He put up numbers we will never, ever see a freshman do again at LSU, or possibly anywhere. This team tanked because Johnny just didn't have clue #1 how to get them to play together or give effort more than 50% of the time.
It's possible to say that Simmons was really good, that Jones screwed up, and that Simmons could have done better and tried harder at times.

This is true because no player of Simmons' caliber is coming anytime soon to LSU after how poorly this season went, with national media saying he would've been better off at Kentucky or Duke. A lot of that falls on Johnny Jones. This season was such a disaster.

That is pure nonsense. He made his FIRST jump shot in SIX games against A&M. That's not better than Mickey or Martin. They played with heart. I would take Martin or Mickey any day over Simmons .

I think Mickey has the most upside of all of them if he develops an outside shot.

I don't think people hate Simmons. I think they just expected him to lead LSU to have a much better season than we did. It's more frustration.
