This happened to me at the Saints vs Jets game, back in the day when Kyle Turley threw the helmet and we lost the game. It was my first Saints game and I drove from Austin, TX where I was living at the time. I could not believe what I was hearing, and at first I was shocked and sat down but as the game went on I was running in place and waving two of those foam fingers around obnoxiously just to piss them off more. I think these people sat in their seat the entire game, LAME!!!
My opinion on the standing up thing is it's like a rock concert; if people are sitting down in front of me, I sit. If they are standing, then I stand. I guess every situation is different, but a football game in Tiger Stadium is like a rock concert, so most importantly you should have fun!

Funny how you mention a selfish, me first attitude that had a detrimental effect. Then you boast of your own infantile shite, amazing.
Amazing what a little self control would do to improve both your lil situations.

Some people are just born assholes I s'pose.
A little consideration doesn't hurt. Ruining other peoples game experience is not a definition of "superfan" You are still an a-hole.
You can stand all game if it doesn't ruin other peoples experience.

Our section wasn't standing for the goaline stand @ MSU..before 3rd down some old man gave me a chest bump and telling me I was a loud mouth prick cause me and my friends happen to yell "if you can't stand up for a big moment like this why did you come?"
sure we were drunk..and sure I am a loud mouth prick....and sure that 60 year old man was about to whip my arse....but it was worth it..some people finally stood up

First or second play of the game Joe Horn caught a 20 plus yard pass and I stood up to support my team (that I had never seen live before), and a guy tells me to sit down no sooner than I stood up. I did sit for a while, but realized it was not as much fun for me (plus people were standing in front of me at various times during the game.)
So yes I guess it was a little selfish on my part, but my lil situation was good once I realized that the people behind me were the minority in the dome that day, and most people were there to have fun and route for their team. Besides, I thought I was showing a little self control by not telling the guy where he could go stick it! When going to a football game the most important rule is to have fun! And tigerfoot, go frick yourself!

FWIW, I'm 20 and I have pretty bad arthritis and have had surgery on both of my knees. That said, I still have no problem standing the whole game even if my knees are killing me in the 2nd quarter. I couldn't imagine sitting down to watch a football game. I even stand the whole time when I'm watching at home.

If you're in the student section you generally stand the whole game. It's pretty much an accepted thing.
Standing for a big play down or a good run or pass play is expected also. If you're sitting down for those types of plays don't complain.
But standing the whole game outside of where the students sit is not necessary. I guess that's why they sell "seats" for the game and not a place for standing! Maybe they ought to! Then those that want to stand the whole game would have something to complain about!

I am torn on this issue. I get up and yell all the time. Stand during 3rd downs.......sometimes entire series........a few times for entire quarters. Going to night games at Tiger stadium is sometimes an endurance challenge. Get there early in the day, stay through the game (on your feet most of the day). And in many cases drive several hours home. Believe me, im not whinning here. If you arent completely drained at the end of the game, you probably didnt have as much fun as I did. Having said that, there is always two guys in front of you that forgets to sit back down IMO. I subscribe to letting the in-game situation dictate this unspoken rule. I think most people have enough common sense to know when it is expected to get on your feet and go nuts. Like 3rd downs, change of momentum series, end of game drives, TD's ect ect. You can yell just as loud from your seat. And I think by standing and going bonkers situationally, it draws a sharper and more impactfull distinction. IMO.
You are right...here is my take on it to add to yours.
BOTH parties have the right to do as they want..
but THAT RIGHT STOPS where the other one's right begins.
If you stand up the whole game, YOU ARE WRONG.
you do not have that right.
If you get irritated because someone stands up "as play dictates and then TIMELY sits back down"
YOU are wrong.
Also, you should be aware of the "climate" of the section in which you are seating....
there are sections where it is OK to stand more, others where it is not.
Don't be a selfish prick and insist on YOUR right to... think of the others also.
It is called respect.

simple solution. designate standing sections & seating sections. a fan caste system will just naturally take over. before you know it, the majority of the stadium will be standing all game long, the way it should be. preserving the glorious history that is Death Valley, not sit on your tushy valley...
*this statement is complete sarcasm. it'll never happen*

I guess it really comes down to having basic consideration of each other. With that it shouldn't be hard to work out compromises.
One thing this thread has me thinking - isn't the standing for the whole game kind of an Aggie thing. I'd hate to think we're trying to emulate them.

LSUDaughter had a kid about 10-12 years old kicking her in the back, she turned around once and said something to him. He stopped for a while then started playing again, she turned around a second time and told the kid, "Don't make me have to turn around again!"

If they aren't old as dirt or have some type of medical issue, then they can respectfully stand up to see the game.
I have no sympathy for lazy 35 year olds.
