this is what frustrates me about our fanbase.. the same ones complaining about the 'sincerity' of our baseball fans are more than likely the same ones who criticize our 'barbarian' football fans.. universally, good sportsmanship is more commonplace in baseball games than in football because it is less violent in nature, and it seems like the fans go by that attitude as well

well i disagree there.

i think the ones criticizing our fans are more likely to be in the "we have to punt so let's fire everybody" crowd.

i wouldn't have stayed for an opposing team victory lap but it amazes me how much it bothers some people.

I would venture to wager most people who criticize the fans congratulating Stony Brook did not play collegiate athletics (or athletics, period) and were never huge underdogs pulling off an upset.

It's all about respecting a great accomplishment than disrespecting anyone or anything, period. But people will see how they wish.

I'd add on top of that, they'd have absolutely no problem congratulating Stony Brook had they pulled off a great effort and LOST.

This was a unique situation. LSU had never lost in a do-or-die situation prior to Sunday. Our fanbase is spoiled, and a lot of these complainers are simply buttsore over the loss.

You can respect stony brook in other ways. Simply clapping for them shows respect. At some point you have to draw the line.

The loudest cheers in one game was on a line drive snagged by there short stop.

I'm going to give them a standing o when they take the field in about 30 minutes or so.

Really? You have a very short term memory my friend. I remember losing to Tulane in the supers in 01, I remember losing in the regional to UCLA, I remember the football team getting absolutely raped on 1/9/12.

It doesn't really bother me, but I will call out the sincerity of it all.

It's like a dog that realizes if he sits, if he gives his paw, if he rolls on his back, he'll get a treat from his owner. Does he want to do all this stupid bullshite? does he enjoy it? No. He just wants the satisfaction of getting his treat.

the LSU fans are the same way. At some point in time, LSU fans cheered a great play made by the opposing team, and it evolved to them cheering for scrappy teams(usually resulting in a loss) after a tough game or series at the box. To LSU fans now encouraging opposing teams to take a victory lap, a tradition that once seemed unique to LSU. Something OUR players looked forward too after winning a regional or super regional. Something that was LSU tradition.

Now where does the dog treat come in? Well, caught up somewhere in all this. LSU fans got recognition for this, usually through the media, sometimes through the opposing team's comments. "Oh, these LSU fans, they are some classy. They are something else! What a great fan base!!"

Now every time the opportunity is presented, they don't hesitate to do something "classy", because they know they will get the ole "Aw shucks, these guys are so classy!". They feed off the gratification. Which is unwarranted, considering these are the same group of fans that are notorious around the SEC for being totally opposite.

Stony Brook deserved some claps after their effort, maybe even a standing ovation if you want to push the envelope. But sticking around for a victory lap? Sportsmanship is one thing, but at this point you are shitting on tradition and homefield advantage, and you are shitting on the competitiveness & effort of our own team.

Do i really care if they do it? not really. Do i call people out that smile in my face but talk behind my back? yea, usually.

Well said. I feel the same way. The victory lap was a little much. Coogan was on the radio the other day and said he wouldn't have really liked to see that from our fans if he was on the LSU team that just lost.

The self-imposed "Stony Brook Line" drawn by you is not necessarily going to be the same as the person sitting next to you.

Yeah, he should have said "at the Box." It's the first time the baseball team has lost on "championship Sunday" at home.

Why do people think it was AAALLLLLLLLL 10,000 LSU fans high-fiving the Stony Brook players in their victory lap? I would say 300-800 at the very most...

I understand your position and your reasons. I don't understand why congratulating a "Little Giants" team with an LSU flair is insulting to our guys, school, tradition, etc.

Stony Brook, as a program, will never experience anything like that again. Ever. Those players will remember their college careers by what happened last weekend in Baton Rouge, not Long Island. I have no doubt those memories were sharpened by our fans giving them a small taste of what having a great fan-base feels like.

Agree to disagree, I suppose.

That right there, I have a problem with...they were a better team, no need to insult them

You don't see how that is insulting to our players.
Would you be okay with Hanover high fiving an opponent who just jacked a grand slam to beat us as he rounded the bases?
