I've always thought teams that throw it down to 1st instead of 3rd after a strikeout are gay.

Teams throw it to 1st and 1st tags bag for a couple of reasons:
1.) In case of dropped strike...already thrown to 1st
2.) Allow catcher and 1st baseman to communicate throws for instances that might actually occur in a game...bunt plays, snap throws, throw downs on dropped third strike.

When I played we threw to first if it was a right handed batter and to third if it was left handed.

Was just messing with you. It's just as much about keeping infielders alert and in the game as it is about their arms, though. Strikeouts = downtime for IF, easy to have concentration lapses.

Players get incredibly bored in the field when a pitcher is mowin em down. Throwin the ball around in to keep the infielders awake.
