Does the portal prove star ratings are worthless?

You see a lot of former 4-5 recruits who were supposed to be impact guys who end up transferring multiple times, mostly due to lack of playing time. Lack of playing time usually is because said player isn’t that good.
Bear Alexander comes to mind as does Walker Howard. Howard was apparently one of the best QB’s in the state/country coming out of high school. He’s now at ULL.
Then there’s guys like Justin Jefferson (albeit before NIL got wild) who was a 2-3 star who was an absolute stud.
Not saying this carries weight. Just interesting.

Statistically star ratings are not worthless. 4 & 5 star players are much likely to be successful in college than 2 or 3 star players. But you are always going to have bad evaluations, busts, etc at the college level just like you have them at the NFL level.

Worthless may have been a bad word.

Yes and no...... the higher rater dudes should get to the field quicker, but you're seeing some of these 4 / 5 starts not getting to the field and hoping in the portal. For us only to replace them with other 4 star players.
Sampson and Womack should have made bigger impacts in their first two seasons.

I get what you are saying. But this has always been the case, it's much more evident now because there is much more movement than there used to be.

Absolutely not. Rankings as a whole matter a ton. Sure you can break down individual players that are outliers. 5 star players succeed at a much higher rate than 4 stars and 4 stars succeed at a much higher rate than 3 stars and so on.

It is interesting to see how many of the players in the top 20ish of the portal are 3-4 stars.

Star ratings are based on potential. Some guys never reach that potential (Walker Howard, etc) , while others (like Justin Jefferson) develop later and outplay their perceived potential.

ratings are for entertainment purposes. they are valuable for that purpose. you dont understand the topic or market.

I reviewed ON3’s industry rankings for 2025.
There are 32 five star guys, one for each pick in the first round of the NFL draft.
There are 368 four star kids.
It’s obvious that there are way more four star kids than there are draft spots, and being a four star doesn’t mean they think you will get drafted.

You will always have kids reach physical maturity quickly and dominate at the highschool level but be at their peak physically entering college and not be able to build or improve on their athleticism much. Walker Howard is a great example of this, he's been very well put together but hasn't been able to improve on anything since arriving to college.
