With No. 11 gone, LSU's LBs immediately improve. No LB should ever run away from tackling Tebow.

wait, what?

Bama doesn't have depth on the Defensive Line. BTW, this article contradicts itself. LSU ranks 10 in off backfield because of "there's talent but a lack of experience at RB", but Bama is 2 on Def Line with limited gametime experience and 2 DL players getting cut or suspended. The media love affair with Bama is hilarious. Can't wait until they lose 3 again....

Maybe even 4 games ... Will have 2 losses when we roll into Tuscaloser for sure

Sheppard was the biggest loss for the entire team. It won't take us long to realize that.

I'm not sure why people freak out about this. KS11 was a huge player for last years sqaud and a great leader, but each season in college football, you lose key guys. It's time for others with experience like RB22 and BT15 to step up and be leaders. LB will be fine will John Chavis coaching them. Chavis is arguably the best LB coach in college ball.

Anyone that ranks LSU's lb play right now is just speculating. Nobody really knows. There are reasons to be optimistic there are reasons to be pessimistic. Anyone that thinks they know... doesn't.

Welcome. This is a message board, where opinions are expressed. Certainly, you understand this. It's all speculation until the games are played but you can evaluate talent combined with track record of coaches and gain a basic understanding of expectation. LSU will have a great defense and are in no way soft in the middle as someone eluded. Both DT's are 300 plus and KM46 is up to 242 lbs without losing speed.

I think Baker is a stud, expecially when they blitz him, but until Fracois of Hatcher show me that they can tackle and don't miss their assignments I will remain skeptical of our LB corps.

I agree regarding SF23, but he is likely the 4th or 5th rotational guy this year. From that perspective, he probably a pretty good 4th option.

You can't qualify this statement about KH37. He has never played LB and by all accounts looks great in camp. I agree he wasn't a great Safety, due to his headhunting mentality. I also think this mentality will make him a really good LB and he has good enough coverage skills to cover TE and RB's. I like our LB corp with Chavis coaching them. A 5 player rotation of RB22, KM46, KH37, SF23, and LM57 is the deepest I remember LSU LBers.

Or maybe he is rotating them with a 'five player rotation' and 'the deepest linebacker group at lsu' because he isnt confident in more than 2 guys... ?? just a possibility.

I don't like the fact that Francois is still listed as a starter. I'm not impressed with him. I think Minter is young enough to keep improving and Baker will be the best of the bunch. I think LB will be the weakest unit on the defense though. They key this year is can we get turnovers consistently.

Second best linebackers? Even as a LSU fan, I'm scratching my head at that one. I figured we'd be more like #7.

You don't see it? Really? Sheppard was our leading tackler and defensive coach on the field. Chavis himself raves about how good he was. We're replacing that with a transplanted safety known for arm tackles.

I think the "safety known for arm tackles" will be good at LB. He has a great mentality for LB and he plays a different LB position as well. So its not really a fair comparison. He will start at SF23 position in the base. There is no doubt the leadership will be missed, but other guys will step up like they should and KM46 will be a beast.

I think part of the ranking is based off the fact that last year LSU's LBers ranked first in the SEC in tackles as a unit.

The writer looks at this year's lineup, sees that Sheppard graduated, and says "Oila!" They're number two!

Even ESPN has said that garbage.

The LB core should be pretty good, if not one of the best in the SEC, especially if nobody gets hurt. Have y'all forgotten that Chavis is the wizard of Linebackers. Baker is coming back and he should have a more dominant year. Last year Minter was a solid back-up and he should be much improved. He easily has the size and strength and he's been coached by Chavis for 2 and half years now. Last year Hatcher's main weakness was coverage, he's was an excellent run stopper, and he should be much better at coverage as a LB. And you never know, Francois might surprise us all, he didn't do great, but he definitely has potential. Those four should make a pretty solid SEC LB rotation. I also kinda hoped that Justin Maclin was going to get a shot, dude could be a beast.
