Won’t have to make that decision. There will be no invitation.

Why would they? They declined last year I don’t see anything different this time

I went to the NIT game against North Texas a few years ago. I remember there were about 1,000 people in the PMAC about 5 minutes before tip. It was sad.
The Tigers then proceeded to get blown off the court by a squad they had handled fairly easily earlier in the season.

The NIT has been irrelevant for a while now. It's becoming more irrelevant with the mandate that the top 2 (NET) major conf teams who don't make the NCAAT get an auto-invite.
I don't see the NIT lasting too much longer. The top seeded teams are those who feel they we snubbed for the NCAAT...so they don't have a lot of motivation to play in a consolation tournament. From a players standpoint, for all teams, they are probably ready to just move on from a long season rather than continuing to practice/play in a consolation tournament. Plus, many are more concerned with entering the portal to find their team for next season. From a coaches standpoint the NIT doesn't have any real benefit for next year because the roster will largely be different anyway.
No fan or player will be excited it LSU gets an NIT bid. The only people who will want one is the coaching staff so they can tout LSU making it to a "postseason" tournament as some sort of great accomplishment

LSU is likely to finish 0-3, losing at Auburn and at home to Texas A&M and a first-round loss in the SEC tournament. It will be 15-17 overall and 3-15 in the conference regular season. At that point, it will be time to pull the McPlug.

Why would it be close? We're currently on pace to finish 15-17. Is that good enough for the NIT these days?

The NIT has a weird formula now. For the SEC (and ACC):
quote:
Each conference receives two exempt bids. These go to the teams with the best average across designated data metrics (BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, SOR, TOR, WAB), excluding any teams that make the NCAA tournament through automatic or at-large qualification.
For example, right now LSU is the 13th ranked SEC in the KenPom and NET ratings. A lot of predictions at the moment have the SEC getting 10-11 teams into the NCAA Tournament. If the SEC gets 11 in, then LSU would likely be in the first two that didn't get in. So assuming Auburn and Mizzou (two SEC teams on the very back end of the bubble) get in, then yes, it's likely LSU would get an invite. Not out of merit. Out of requirement.

Doubt they make it but why not

If LSU wants to play in the NIT, I suspect there will be an opportunity. I believe Auburn will choke their way out of the tournament. But, with the increasing number of teams who are opting out, I wouldn’t be surprised if they get an invite. Personally, I would hope they let McMahon go, meaning that we would likely decline as well.

Yep. The NIT is just desperate for anyone to participate who might draw any type of audience. Oklahoma is ahead of LSU in the pecking order. But it is very likely they fire their HC at the end of the season...which would likely prompt them into turning down a bid. I doubt Auburn would accept a bid either so they could just get a jump on next year. It's a little deflating to go from the Final Four to the NIT in the span of one year.
No one is attending the LSU games anyway and I doubt many, if any, would suddenly be excited to see LSU play in a postseason game just because "someone had to" vs actually accomplishing anything. Last time LSU played in the NIT there were probably less than 2,000 fans that attended...and that was McMahon's best team.

I think for the NIT tournament, instead of the teams playing the initial rounds, all the NIT team coaches should enter a face slapping tournament with the final two coaches teams playing for the NIT title.

We not getting an offer

Why is Oklahoma ready to fire their coach and LSU isn't? Oklahoma looked pretty good in the PMAC Saturday night; their opponent, not so much.

LSU was offered the NIT last year which I felt they wisely declined, due to players opting out even before the end of the regular season. I think the situation this year is a little different. I don't see the team declining this year if offered the chance to burnish their postseason credentials.

It will give the SEC Network an opportunity to update its graphic showing McMahon's postseason accolades. 4 NCAA Tournaments (none at LSU) and 2 (somebody had to accept) NIT appearances.

No. The Pear has spoken and he says no.

Basketball “send off” is Wednesday. As opposed to senior night. I know who we need to “send off!!!”
