I would be very surprised to see him hit the portal because Johnson brought in another guy. I'm sure Johnson has told him that his chance to play SS is still there. I don't know how it would leave a bad taste to Thompson when you lose Doughty and Berry to draft and you lose Holt, Safford, and Cranford to the portal. His playing time will definitely be there.

What if we're not done? Bring in Denton? Romero and Guidry make it to campus?

I dont think there is a reason that guidry/romero would need to play right away. They would have a year to be groomed. Ive also given up on us getting romero.

Now if denton came, id think thompson or dugas not coming back was a real possibility

Thompson is an average at best hitter that, if he stays needs to be down towards the bottom of the order. Not a guy hitting 4th/5th like he did alot this year.

Then my opinion on it will change. As of now, I'm thinking the most likely thing that will happen is Guidry will make it to campus. I don't think just him making it will make a difference. I haven't really seen or heard much on Denton since he entered the portal.

If Romero makes it, he is going to play next season. I'm losing my optimism on that happening though.

If Romero makes it to campus he will be starting somewhere in game one.

Agreed, you don't have to rush Romero or Guidry in. But, they're your future so maybe you want to, especially if we're just talking about replacing a bottom of the order, poor fielding guy.

Milazzo is also going to be a bottom of the order defensive guy, so I'd really like a bit more thump down there.

Also a scenario in which Pearson or Dugas take an infield spot to open up an outfield spot.

I think if Dugas comes back he will be in the infield. Either 3rd or second.

Unless Brady Neal makes it to campus, which there is a 99.99 percent chance he won’t, Milazzo will be starting at catcher most of the time. This season proved why having a defensive catcher is so important and it doesn’t matter what they hit.

You think they are worried about which position he hits better while playing? It will depend upon which position he can effectively play as well as who else Jay wants in the lineup.

Lol, sorry I had a typo. He doesn’t have great range or good feet. He is better suited for third base.

Thompson still has All-SEC talent. All of his issues are correctable with hard work and good coaching and i wont be surprised if he kills it at SS next year. Maybe he figures it out and maybe he doesn't. But at least we won't be in the position we were this year where we had no other option.

Agreed, which is why I want more thump down there than Thompson's bat and poor fielding.

And, I'm not just talking trash about Thompson. I just wouldn't be surprised if some of the things I mentioned aren't also understood by Jay and expressed to Thompson...so I wouldn't be shocked if he entered the portal.

In a perfect world, Thompson fields .950 and hits .310 with 12 bombs and we're all happy. I just don't know if he can.

I think a lot of his issues can be solved by letting him get comfortable at third base. Majority of his mistakes seemed to be made on routine balls where he had time to think. That thinking time drastically gets cut down at third base.

When a kid walks through the doors hitting .300 and fielding .966 you can write him in at SS. I'd like to see Thompson at third and Dugas, or a freshman, at second.

JT was not the worst hitter in our lineup. I guess depends on what you prefer but I would rather have had him up in a big spot than Jobert, and it's not even close. Honestly, being the worst hitter (.286 avg) on a team that hit close to .300 as a club isn't really an insult.

we've got to stop penciling in all these freshman right away. Let's look at all the teams that have made deep runs, they're all veteran teams. If a freshman turns out to have a Morgan/crews freshman season then so be it let them have it but JT was not near as bad as a whole (I understand the errors) as people make him out to be and I'll take a third year starter over a true freshman 9/10 times.

I don't think that's an unrealistic jump for him.

he improved his average, slugging, and OBP from year 1 to 2. He cut down his strikeouts by 13 and increased his walks by 15. He hit 10 more doubles and 2 less HR at 6. I don't think .300ish + and few more bombs is out of reach.

He hasn't done it, and we have 2 years of tape on him and so do other teams. Again, that would be great, but who knows.
