I believe the way the story goes is LSU was offered a bowl (don't remember which one) -- but decided to decline, BELIEVING they would get the Cotton Bowl invitation..

Then ITS LSU's FAULT. NOBODY on here should blame ND for this.

quote:

however, breaking their (then) tradition of not playing in bowls, Notre Dame accepted an invitation to the Cotton Bowl and LSU was left out.

Again. NOBODY can blame this on ND.

it was a decision to hold out for the Cotton Bowl bid --- which did not come due to ND accepting.

AGAIN.... Thats LSU'S Fault.

Texas didn't want to play LSU. It was their best team since 58-59. Texas got an easier game and the Cotton got a big draw, and LSU lost a chance to beat #1.

In 1969, Texas had the best running game in the country. LSU had the best defense against the run. LSU was told the Cotton Bowl was interested. LSU preferred the Cotton over other bowls because of the possibility of playing for the National Championship. Archie Manning beat the Tigers in Jackson, 26-23, for LSU's only loss. The Sugar made an under the table deal with Ole Miss that day, locking up the Sugar Bowl. The Tigers played Mississippi State on the day that bowl invitations were supposed to be extended, and won 55-7.
The Cotton Bowl representative was staying at the old Prince Murat on Nicholson Drive. He never made a formal offer to LSU. The Cotton had started negotiations with Notre Dame earlier in the season. The Irish, because of academic reasons, had a policy of not participating in post season football games. They thought it would detract from their student-athletes concentration on their studies. Notre Dame changed their policy to participate in the Cotton and play Texas for the national championship. By Sunday morning, LSU was out in the cold as far as major bowls were concerned. The Bluebonnet and the Sun Bowl were interested, but the LSU seniors who had hoped to play Texas, were now looking at another month of practice for a minor bowl game. The voted not to go to a bowl.

That'd be so badass if les would get on tv and say "the chick fil a bowl is a flop!" So it's frickin easy for our football team to say, we refuse

My Dad used to say that was the best LSU team of his lifetime.

Let Archie and Ole Piss steal one we shoulda won 26-23.

LSU91MBA is correct. Bowl games for many years were not counted as part of the season but were counted as exhibitions(rewards). The last polls were taken before the bowl games. Around '65 that changed. Notre Dame had not gone to a bowl game in 45 years because they did not count and they were more centered on academics and wanted their player athletes to study for finals. As LSU91MBA said the lesser bowls invited first so you had to decide to take them or hope for a better one. We were a shoe in for the Cotton Bowl against No. 1 Texas. We had a chance for a National Championship. Slim one though it was. We turned down the Bluebonnet Bowl and Liberty Bowl. Notre Dame lifted it's ban on Post Season bowls and the Cotton Bowl picked them even though we had a better record and were higher ranks. Of course because they were Notre Dame and hadn't been to a bowl in almost 50 years. I have hated Notre Dame ever since.

I was at that Jackson game when Archie Manning had a cast on his arm and LSU lost a close one we should have won. I remember the Cotton Bowl dropped us after that and took Notre Dame in a surprise move. A carload of us guys got tickets and went over for the game. It was a double header back then. We played OM in the afternoon and Ms State played Bama at night. I went to several of them before they stopped double headers in Jackson for campus games. The players lead by Joe Labrusso I think, voted to not go to a lesser bowl. McClendon felt screwed too by the Bowls. I was a freshman then.

No it wasn't. It was the Cotton Bowls fault. They could have STILL taken LSU but decieded not to.

They opted to take a Notre Dame team that was ending a self-imposed bowl ban dating back to the 1920s. It was a more glamorous pick than LSU.

I remember this. I also remember being stunned that a 7-4 team would turn down a bowl invite.

..Jerry Stovall declined a Peach Bowl invitation his first year.

It was a different time. Back then, the school could decline an invitation.

Today, the SEC has negotiated bowl and tv contracts. You won't be in the conference long if you don't cooperate in going to bowls and being on tv.

If I remember correctly...

Notre Dame did not go to bowl games back in the day. For whatever reason I don't remember.

One specific year at the last moment, ND decided they wanted to go to a bowl game and they were awarded LSU's spot in a premier bowl.

LSU got the arse and decided not to accept a lesser bowl bid..

I think this is how it went down.

I think at that point all of the bowls were filled...... weren't 45 bowl games then.

Yep and it was Notre Dame's fault.

The seniors decided that they did not want to go to a lesser bowl so they voted to stay home.

The players all got a cool little trophy with the season schedule, the record and a screw attached to the plaque.

My dad still has his

Would love to see a pic of that trophy if you have it.
