Young and Black. My guess is enlarged heart. That is the main killer of young black athletes.

Im middle-aged, white and have a bad heart

The point is that it is kind of weird, general, and stupid to just throw it out there.

no it isn't, since it's well known that black men have a much higher risk of heart disease compared to white men, and heart disease is the no. 1 killer of black men.

It's not "weird" or "stupid" to point it out - it's factual.

While it's true that black men are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than white men, and it's also true that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of black males, Kracka said:

An enlarged heart is NOT the main killer of young black athletes. Not even close.

you're being too picky. I took the poster's main point to be that it was probably a heart issue, which statistically is most likely.

If you want to quibble about the specific type of heart problem, go right ahead.

Almost every time you see an black athlete die, its going to be something heart related. More often than not, it's an enlarged heart. I really don't get the outrage about what I pointed out.

Uhh, that's important. There are tons of different types of heart issues and to just give a blanket statement that if a black guy dies of heart problems, it's probably because he was black is just as ignorant as saying that enlarged heart problems are more prevalent in black guys. Which would be wrong, by the way.

I do know what he meant because he specifically mentioned "enlarged heart". That would be hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and there is no information to point to that being more prevalent in black men as opposed to white men or any other demographic.

Don't reduce my post to mere quibbling.

I acknowledged that black men are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than white men.

I acknowledged that it's also true that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of black males.

I'm going to repeat what I said in my first post, which you apparently did not read in full. I'll put my acknowledgments in bold and italics so maybe you will read it this time:

quote:

It may have been heart disease, but there are many kinds of heart disease. Kracka pointed to an "enlarged heart" as the main killer of young black men. It's not.

That's not quibbling.

Those are facts.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for white males, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Heart disease is a general term that includes many specific heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to heart attacks.

So how do we square this? Apparently this is true for all males.
