I don't have the stat, but on Dec 2 LSU posted on their FB that they were on pace to have the second fewest in NCAA history.

We had to score on every possession just to stay in games...

We likely set a record for fewest punts forced also.

And they weren’t punting less because they were committing a lot of turnovers. They only had 7 turnovers all year.

Close

This is punts per play though, to normalize the data.

I don't want to seem like I'm defending House, but there were things that were out of his control. He could have made changes and didn't, though, so he is definitely not absolved. There is NO reason or reasons to have a defense that bad at LSU.

1.8/game in 2023

in fact, outside of 2019 we only averaged less than 4 punts per game 1 other time (going back to 2009). that was 2013 with 3.3/game.

for reference
2019
3.1/game

2014 (just cuz)
5.5/game

actually our opponents averaged 3.2/game which is a little surprising to me.

it's the lowest since 2009. Washington is the only other team to have an average under 2 and that was 1.9, last year. The best average was above 3 for several of those years. I'm guessing it's the all time record. especially with the "advantage" of shorter games this year.
