Did anyone clarify the "leading with your helmet" call on the whiff?

seriously, he whiffed right over the player on a crucial 3rd down jumping over him, and a penalty was called.

has anyone seen this before? a penalty called for a player not even making contact with another player?

I think it was because he launched himself, which is against the rules

He launched himself and lowered his head making him lead with his helmet. He would have been fine if he wouldn't have lowered his head.

He launced himself.
He led with helmet.
He was going 90mph.
He was a blur.

Good call, only one to make under the circumstances.

Loston redemmed himself when he forced the fumble on the kickoff.

he did lower his helmet but the guy was underneath him. he didn't hit him with the helmet in any way. I think is is a call made on principle to protect the athletes. So i can't be too mad, but i was last night.

But if you don't make contact... is it still a penalty to launch?

Viewing it live and on slo mo replay it didn't look like he made contact.

Still questionable (at best) to me. I'd like to see a pic of the so called contact.

But who cares... games over. Refs were still better than SEC refs

The call was "unnecessary roughness." I have never seen unnecessary roughness called before when there was no contact made. Its like calling "attempted holding." bullshite call, IMO. Its football. Not ballroom dancing.

I freaked out about that call but I guess it's the rule now. Anybody know when it changed?

Loston is gonna get another one of those this year I bet.

Was ok call. I guess.

Made me wonder about Loston's football iq. We held them on 3rd down and he tried to decapitate the guy causing a personal foul.

I've asked this several times and got no answer from the "duh obviously that's a penalty its called all the time" crew. I hold it was a bullshite call.

The Ref did Loston a favor. I hope he learned his lesson. I hate when a young man subjects himself to a neck injury and possible paralysis by being reckless.

this was a call that should have been made and was. Hopefully, this will help Loston use some football IQ and prevent him lowering his head like that. I love that he is a big hitter just keep your face mask up. No brainer. If he lowers his head as hard as he hits, then someone will die. Stupid play. Illegal technique. could have cost us greatly. Hope coaches use this to teach him.

I think the call was right as much as I didn't like it during the game. Rule 9-1-4 Defenseless Player: Contact to Head and Neck Area.

No player shall target or initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow, or shoulder. When in question it is a foul.

Rule 2-27-14 defines a defenseless player as a receiver whose focus is on catching a pass (there were five others).

Basically any high tackle is going to be looked at very closely this year so our guys will have to change their aiming point.

If he gets his hand out front, does it make it ok?

I didn't have a problem with the call. The fact that the call was made will be in the back of Craig's mind the next time he thinks about doing something like that. He could of hurt the receiver but he also could have really fricked himself up.

OldBeach, if you make any contact with a receiver's head or neck, that call will be made 99% of the time.
