re: Did anybody else notice Newton get the snap and just stand there?

3 main issues:
1. our defensive backfield could NOT shed a block
2. the dline was playing contain and it is a relatively passive scheme
3. poor tackling
They did do some line stunts here and there but the oline just manhandled them.

Looked like if the LB's stepped up into the line of scrimmage he headed for the corner and the LB's would get caught up in the bodies at the line of scrimmage.
If the LB's stayed back he just attacked straight up the field and broke tackles and juked them out of their shoes.

And to say it was working because of the score is nuts. Auburn started with the average worst field position maybe in the history of college football. That's what kept the score down.
And still wasn't that bad of a defensive scheme. It was all based on not giving up the big play. Sure they had a couple, but you can't run blitz a spread! Should they have not played as much nickel, sure, but you start putting an extra man in the box or cover a receiver with a LB and Newton will kill you. Chavis loves to blitz, but you can't do that against an offense like that. Chavis has forgot more about football than anyone on this board will ever know.
The basic plan was to keep the score as low as we could without taking too many risks on defense, minimize the mistakes on offense and get a couple big plays from the special teams.

It was based on gang tackling and waiting for Auburn to make mistakes, fumbles or interceptions etc.
Auburn didn't make many and Cam Newton just ran over and around people.
Watching Auburns dominance it was a miracle we had even a chance to win the game in the end.

Cam was just stopping to think what to buy first with all those NFL $ millions he's gonna get...a new private jet...big mansion for mama...maybe one of those Miami Vice gofast boats...maybe even buy a cool laptop just to see what it's like not to steal one, ya know?
He had a lot of time to do a lot of thinking Saturday.

Does anyone on here know how to attack the spread? Most college coaches don't know how. If you have an athlete like Newton it almost can't be stopped.
The most important piece to stopping the spread is DE play. If you have ends that play good in the run game, which we don't, then it's possible to stop.

Who has a defensive scheme based around "gang tackling"? Do you know anything about football? "Gang tacking" isn't a defensive scheme. Neither are turnovers. Turnovers are a product of scheme and effort.

I love how everyone strokes that dude off so hard, anybody realize that he runs like 13.6 40?

Who Newton? I bet he runs a sub 4.5. That's pretty good for a 6'6" 250 lbs. QB!! Name me someone that big that runs that fast. You'll be hard pressed to find many NFL guys.

The bottom line is Auburn has a very good offensive system and have recruited the right people for that system.
which is why this whole "Miles recruits talent" excuse is pathetic. Raw talent is great, but more importantly, if you don't recruit athletes that fit into your system of offensive thought, you won't have much an offense.
We have a schizo offense, simply because we're putting square pegs through round holes.

well, for the defense that was the plan. God knows what the frick the offensive plan was.
But, defensively, it kind of worked. The offense had 3 opportunities to take the game into its hands, and they shelved it. Still proof positive that it takes a complete team to compete, and we just don't have it.

100% correct! I saw a recent interview with Bobby Bowden where he said this was FSU's problem his last 10 years or so. They got lazy and recruited who the "experts" said was good. They figured that these "experts" had to be right and that any 5* would fit into their system. It just isn't so.

It was based on playing off the line, letting Cam run and having multiple people get to him to tackle him.
Did you see what happen when one guy tackled him? It didn't work out that well.
Its like zone defense. You sit back and read and react. Rather than attempting to put pressure on him and people running themselves out of the play.

Kevin Faulk used to do this too. He could accelerate like hell when a hole opened.

I'd be willing to bet that Saban figures out how to hold the Barn to under 150 yards rushing in the Iron Bowl.
Posted on 10/26/10 at 2:26 pm to PinevilleTiger
We should have all out blitzed his arse. We should have brought the house. He had time to do whatever he wanted back there. No pressure what so ever.

so doubledeuce, you are stating that if i get all five star athletes, you will beat with two star athletes because they fit your system? these are kids we are talking about, not seniors/juniors going into the nfl. give me 5 stars and i will crush your 2-3 star team any day of the week!

you want to run blitz with 4 down linemen and 2 linebackers, who is gonna be doing the blitzing? you'd be leaving entire thirds of the field uncovered
Under this logic, it's amazing that Nick Saban has ever won a football game.

doubledeuce, you must have been some JV quarterback who carried around the clip board!
