what that looks like based on the gif is that it hit the palm of his glove and moved to the edge, when that happened he dropped it.

an interesting tidbit
apparently the MLB changed the transfer rule (which was at stake last inning) to where he couldn't drop it in the transfer even if he clearly made the catch. Than a month or so after the season started they changed it back.
