That wasn't an out. It's like a balk, you have to show control before switching hands and he was brining the glove down as he caught it. Terrible call
I think they adjusted the MLB rule to make it clearer. But that was clearly not a catch.

He'll get the benefit of the doubt almost every time since he was camped under it.
ETA: Even thought it was a hard hit ball, just right at him for those not watching.

so here is exactly what happened
he catches it, moves his glove down and while the glove is moving down the ball comes out.
he didn't have it for more than a second or two at most.

Bad call, it is a judgment call but a bad one.
He never showed he had the ball, he had the glove faced in and he could have been losing it already when switching. Bad call

Its a judgement call. Could easily have been called a drop, but at 11pm, no ump will call that. He was probably half asleep when he rang him up. He was probably grumpy about getting woken up when Mainieri came out to yell at him.

Jim is trying to say he reached in to try and get it, no he didn't the ball came out when he was bringing the glove down.

Just got to the box and the first base ump is getting railed. wtf happened???
Posted on 5/10/14 at 10:45 pm to catholictigerfan
I thought it was a catch. He was definitely going to grab the ball with his right hand.

I have no video, but if a line out is the same thing in principle as an line out/drop then we've lost the point of a line out

Centerfielder dropped a fly ball when apparently using his throwing hand to take it out the glove.

He has to show control, but get ready for a lot of bad calls tonite in order to speed up the game.

It happened too fast to be considered a catch is my point

Well that sounds like some bull shite. Maybe the umps didn't spend enough time at the bar?

I'll admit it was bang bang, but to me it looked like bringing the glove down he lost it. I guess it depends on the rule, if the rule is he had to clearly had control of the baseball than that isn't a catch, if something else I don't know.

Watch the replay, that ball is coming out before his hand reaches the glove. Watch the white ball before his hand gets in the glove

I'm going to watch this until the end if for no other reason than to hear Jim complain.
