no wonder Chavis could never slow down the spread while at UT

Florida would be the measure of the spread in the SEC, yes
He did pretty good against Florida this past year.
He held Florida to 16 first downs and 243 total yards.

Seems like they can just out athlete folks these days
isn't that why you would want more athletes/speed defending it?

It's worth repeating that Chavis had his defense tied with Alabama for tops in the SEC in total defense.
But there's more...Alabama's offense was also tops in the SEC in time of possession. Tennessee's was dead last.
Chavis did a fantastic job with the 2008 Vol defense. I'm glad he's on our sidelines now!

by the numbers, yes... but did you see the game? the numbers tout the defense more than the defense deserves touting
that game was blown open early and Florida had a punt return on top of it
I think the stats are misleading...I saw the game and the Gators did what they wanted to do

Id rather a guy with 4.6 or 4.7 speed who knows where he's supposed to be...than a 4.5 guy who doesnt. That seemed to be a big problem last year. Also I think bringing more pressure from guys like CJ will alleviate the need to guard anyone for very long..

nobody knew where they were supposed to be last year
and no, you don't want Jacob Cutrera trying to cover ANYONE in the passing game

1) If Chavis can eliminate the confusion our defense will be markedly improved. Over-substitution was major part of the problem.
2) Because I expect the offense to be more consistent there won't be as much pressure on the defense as was last year. Simply put we ought to better on both sides of the ball.
3) With that said, I hope Chavis' best years are in front of him and not behind him. We have had and should have better defenses than what Tenn. has fielded.

quote:Speed isn't always the answer, even against speed. Running out 11 Trindon Holliday's would not make for a very good defense. You also have to have guys that can tackle, read, cover, shed blocks, etc.

Umm, he's fielded a top 3 in the SEC defense 9 times in 14 years as a DC at UT. And he's consistently done it with lesser-rated recruits than he's working with now.
I'd say the odds are in our favor.

Damn i always wanted to try having 11 5'8 160 pounders on defense!!!!!!

If you measure defenses strictly by total defense

I hope you're right. And I assume your stats are correct. But 9/14 is 64%. I would like to think we're going to finish in the top 3 a much higher pct than that.
As far as talent, Fulmer recruited pretty well for most of Chavis' years there. There was seldom a talent shortage at UT those years.

Florida did not do what they wanted to. Otherwise they wouldn't of had a season low 23 points scored offensively and season low 243 yards offensively (by a longshot the lowest).
Those points included a 44 yard TD drive setup by a long KO return. A 1 yard drive that ended in a FG setup by a fumble. A 47 yard TD drive setup by a good PR.
Florida only had 2 long sustained drives all day and they both resulted in FGs.
Chavis did well in 3 out 4 tries against Meyer's spread.

Anyone know how many times UF punted against UT?

At most five if that stat is correct, but that doesn't count field goals or if they went on 4th down or not

I'd be willing to bet UT never had as many top five classes in a five year period as LSU has had.
But I'm too lazy to look it up.

Talked to a UT friend of mine just now, and he had a nice bit of info.
I think everyone here knows that the state of Tennessee produces a minimal amount of football talent. That's why UT has always maintained the largest recruiting budget in the country. Because to survive in the SEC, the Vols have to bring in enough out-of-state talent to compensate for their weak in-state recruiting base.
The one position UT has always had trouble filling is DT. Last year the Vols had only two quality DT's on the roster. There was a huge drop off in the quality of the reserves. So ball control teams like Bama and Florida wore UT down.
When you add in how bad UT's offense was at holding the ball...they finished dead last out of twelve teams in the SEC...it makes what Chavis accomplished last year even more amazing.
I think our defense is in good hands!

and you'd be wrong...
LSU doesn't have the talent level we had in the late 90's and in to the early 00's, especially defensively. (and I really doubt you'll get that level of D talent for Chavis to work with during his time at LSU)
There is a reason it was looked at as an absolute embarrassment that Chavis and the old staff blew that 01 SECCG. That team had 10 players that were picked that year in the draft.
