I honestly feel like this is already a much improved defense from last year. The biggest boogey man in the room right now is giving up random big plays after playing pretty solid defense otherwise.

If they can stop getting out of position and maintain some integrity in their schemes on defense we should be pretty solid moving forward. The big run by Nicholls State and two big runs by South Carolina really skewed the averages on defense.

In the 1st game in Vegas, USC also reeled in 1 or 2 highly unlikely pass plays that I don’t fault our defensive backfield too much for.

Hopefully these games coming up against UCLA and South Alabama can help us get some really good work and experience in and help us work out all those kinks. I think Baker is doing a good job and starting to get things turned around for us. There’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Exactly. Without the 2 big busted running plays they are below 3yds per rush . Same in the Nichols game.More concerning is the safety giving up the big run. If he breaks down like he's supposed to do in open field tackle they stop him. But I see it even in the pros when they are going for the big hit instead of the sure tackle. You can coach the crap out of it but the player still has to perform. Breaking downi s the most important skill set for open field tackling but you have pros that still can't do it.

Both had a LB out of position. Weeks and Penn.

LBs are gambling because we’re getting killed inside.

Don't forget about Stamps being held on one of the plays. Maybe he makes the tackle, maybe not, but we'll never know.

Not to mention half the defense moved positions and are learning on the fly. We are far from peaked as a team.

Incorrect. The long run by Rocket, Weeks peaks in the B gap when he has C gap. On the long run by Sellers, Swinson played the speed motion when he should play the QB and force the give on Power read. Penn is playing slow but okay. Weeks making mistakes here and there but he’s been overall good.

100%

Jr High coach here, this is back to basics on owning your gap and playing team ball vs trying to make the play.

Only concerning thing is this is the same case last year and we have a new staff not coaching this and holding the team accountable.

This has been a problem for LSU going back to the latter O days and certainly in the Kelly days. I'm not sure that's something that gets fixed midseason as an entire unit. Marginal improvement is possible though.
