to hit the QB "HARD" once he's released the football. It's because Devin White's hit was so hard that the targeting was called. Defenders are now tasked with peeling away at the last second to accomplish this. It is really challenging, especially when you are playing a big physical QB that likes to run like Fitzgerald.

However, we see this at both the college and NFL levels. The Refs will protect the QB's at all cost.

It's this rule that is allowing QB's in the NFL to play into their late 30's and early 40's.

Football has changed, not only do defenders have to adjust, but so do the fans!!!

In D. White's case, you can't put yourself into that gray area where you might get run. Especially if you buy in to the conspiracy theory that the refs saw this as an opportunity to sideline White for Alabama, which is unlikely to be true.

It's no longer acceptable to field your best players against Alabama.

He literally pushed him down. It wasn’t a hard hit. It was a shove and nothing more, frick the SEC office

Subsection 3-1-d of this Rule includes a waiver for Alabama.

Might as well just make QBs down when touched by 2 hands.

Honestly, I think DW could have checked-up or at least put up his hands to show no ill-intent. Downvote lower-right.

He pushed him! Two hands, hard, in the chest.

He didn't even follow through with the tackle.

He pushed the man down like a little bitch talking smack.

Two hand shiver, like a sled. He went down like my sister.

Unless you're a Gump! SEC Referee yesterday in Knoxville to Bama players: "Alright boys If you punch, kick, or target one more time I'm going to be forced to tell your coach!"

SEC refs in Baton Rouge: "White you're out of here and you're lucky we don't suspend you for the whole Bama Game!" Devin White: "Sir what did I do?" Ref: "OH You know!!!"

The fact remains that, if Devin White would have pulled up at the last second, he would be playing in the first quarter of the Alabama game.

he did pull up. He did not drive him to the ground. He was standing in the same spot looking down at him at which he made initial contact.

He didn't even run through him, drag him to the ground, drive him, flip him... he pushed him down and stood there.

or jumped to block, or hit him in his torso. He went in too late and too high.

you think that was a late hit don't you?

1. late hit =/= targeting
2. wasn't late anyway

You must've been listening to ESPN, the only outlet I've heard say anything about being late.
