I kind of a took a bit of a deep dive into the Clemson defense. I'm not into watching terrible ACC football, so I didn't really know to much about them. I mostly wanted to learn about their starters, put a name to a number, position, etc.

I have to say my initial take away is it's more about the scheme and coaching than the individual talent. Player to player LSU is leaps and bounds better. The thing I was most surprised about is the production of Clemsons DL.

In 2018 their starting DL (Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Austin Bryant) combined for 56.5 TFL, 55 QB pressures, and 27 sacks.

In 2019 their starting DL (Thomas, Pinckney, Davis, Foster) have combined for 29.4 TFL, 28 QB pressures, and 11 sacks.

I also found it kind of curious that their best pass rusher (by far) Isaiah Simmons, has rarely rushed the passer in the last two months. They are very multiple and bring pressure from a ton of different areas though.

Dude has a knack for ball hunting, it's a shame to waste his talent at the line of scrimmage...

He's like a big honey badger. Very impressive dude, the other guys play relatively sound and don't give up big plays...unless it's an off tackle run.

the main point is that while they have a good Dline it's not dominant. That's what it takes to stop the really good offenses.

conversely, that's our dline as well. very good but not dominant. so we expect Clemson to score some points. I believe, overall, we have more talent on defense and that our defense has gelled and is peaking at this time. so, I expect us to get more stops and thus outscore Clemson.

So from those stats, their D-line has about half the output of last years line. I think our O-line handles them and Jugular Joe does his thing.

No question. They have elite talent in spots, the rest are really good role player types who just do their job.

Venebles is a very dialed in, hands on DC. Best in the biz IMO and I think his players sort of know what he’s thinking.

That said, he’s never seen anything like our offense, I’m not sure anyone ever has.

It’s going to be a hell of a matchup.

To be honest, I absolutely hate to sound like a homer, but the more I learn about this years Clemson team I just don't think they can keep up with us. I see LSU winning by 2+ scores.

I tend to agree. I could see this being a 52-35 game.

Clemson's offense does worry me a little bit, but it just feels like any defense we face is almost irrelevant. I kept saying the same thing about OU last week. The opposing offense will have to outscore LSU.

The biggest question is will blitzes get home at a high rate. Another problem could be Simmons as a green dog spy while dropping seven, he has the instinct and talent to make make him dangerous.

Kind of like Bama's Xavier McKinney. He was hitting stride before the LSU game and Clyde and Burrow straight up punked him.

I kinda feel this way...BUT watch for ball hunting...
My prediction:

Clemson DBs will jump routes
-giving up 20 yards on a miss is worth that 10% chance to intercept JB
They will ball tackle every chance
-Clemson only wins this game if the turnover is +3 or better

I think LSU can counter this (and blitzes) my running all over them...with Clyde, Joe, CC, AND CHASE...
If Venables counters this quickly Joe kills them in the air...

Anyone who watched this, what did y’all think about the background music? Curious if I should turn it down further or just get rid of it. Thanks!

He has seen everything like your offense. He has watched every game - charted every play and noted every tendency.

Every. Single. One.

And he has drawn up a scheme for every single one.

It's gonna be a great, physical chess match, but if you think BV won't be ready with two weeks to prepare, you have not been watching the CFP for the past five years.

Good luck to you boys. Have a good game.

This clemson defense is not comparable with last years. They use more blitz pressure, bringing several rushers. They might succeed a few times but Burrow is too good at blitz pickup and the LSU receivers too good for that to work consistently. I think Clemson is also gonna have some success against against LSU. The offenses seem too be fairly well matched but I think the LSU defense will be the difference maker.

It’s what you do when you can’t get pressure with your front 4

See our defense last year.

People have said that about Clemson’s defense every year except last season. But they keep performing. Then it’s , well they don’t play anybody. Simple truth, it’s hard tell, Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State have all been boat raced just like Clemson boat races the ACC. We’ll see on the 13th, maybe Clemson has not seen anything like LSU, but I can promise you LSU hasn’t played anyone like Clemson.
