We declined when Ben Simmons was here too. The future does not look bright.

Does declining look bad- yes, usually. It either comes off as pretentious or weak. But there is a reason more power conference teams and a few in mid-majors conferences do it now and will going forward.
This tournament only benefits low majors who lost their conference tourneys and bottom mid majors now who might actually keep a core of their players together for the following year. Most P5 teams for whom not making the NCAAT is a disappointment decline now for one reason- to focus on scouting for the portal. A few guys on non-tourney teams, or who have sat out even if their team is still playing have already made it clear they are entering, even if they can’t officially yet. And we know there’s always tampering and the agent back channels they can be worked. Better to put all of the staff’s time into that immediately than game planning for a pitty invite to the NIT.
I’ll give Memphis last season as an example. A lot of people criticized Penny Hardaway for turning down the NIT invite last year. However, that team landed with a thud in the AAC Tourney, had internal issues, and had a few guys with a foot out the door and already checked out. Considering the turnaround this season after going out and putting together a completely rebuilt roster with only one returning player, it’s hard to knock what he did in hindsight. It’s not a lone reason for their turnaround, but the complete focus on the next season certainly didn’t hurt them.
I’m not saying this is going to work similarly for McMahon- not based on what we’ve seen from him so far. I’m just saying this philosophy is the new norm in college hoops. USCe did the same thing after a disappointing season. There is probably going to be a lot of roster turnover here next season, so there’s not a lot of point in hosting an NIT game with this group. Definitely less so than last season.
Do I like it personally- no, but it is what it is.

It would have been more embarrassing to be playing in that sorry tournament. It was time for the season to come to a merciful end.

You could’ve just said “I don’t blame McMahon”. Would’ve been more efficient.

NIT : Coach McMahon, we’d like to invite your team to our tournament - what do you say ?
Coach McMahon : No thanks we are pissed ! If the NCAA can’t see their way clear to invite ALL the teams in the SEC then by Gawd we are done !

We are limping in to the tournament after grinding it out against the best conference in the history of the sport. The guys have deserved some rest and gear up for another tournament run for next year.

I used the Memphis example for a reason. It only doesn’t look bad if it works out next season. If Penny Hardaway had botched handling this team after last year ending badly and turning down that NIT bid and then likely doing it again, he’s on a hot seat there at minimum. He has 2 previous tourney appearances, but only one win.
But no one cares today because Memphis is a 5 seed with one of the best non-con records and SOS in D1 and the best see of any non-power conference team by two lines. That covers over last season’s issues pretty well.
If McMahon doesn’t get it done, this will just be one of many decisions that look like a failure and get him fired after next season. And my money is on it not helping substantially.

I don't think getting beat at home by North Texas in the first round fits even the loosest definition of "a run".
