David Patrick begins his first season as an Assistant Coach for the Saint Mary's men's basketball team, following one season as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Gaels. Patrick came to Saint Mary's in 2006 from Nicholls State University where he served as an assistant coach for the 2005-06 season. Bermuda born, Patrick joined the coaching ranks in 2005 after playing four years of professional basketball overseas. Following his collegiate playing days, Patrick returned to Australia to play for the Canberra Cannons of the National Basketball League from 1999-2001. Following his first season with the Cannons, he was named the NBL Rookie of the Year in 2000. He then joined the Chester Jets of England's British Basketball League for the 2001-02 season, where he garnered second team all-league honors. His final professional season was spent in Spain where he was a member of Alcora of the LEB1 league in 2002-03. In high school Patrick came to J.P Piper's Chapel Trafton Tigers from Australia as a senior. He led the team to the 1995 Class A State quarterfinals and was named the Louisiana Player of the Year. He was selected as district M.V.P, was a First Team All Parish selection, and was selected to participate in the Louisiana High School All-Star Game. He was also a member of junior national teams in Australia and named as an All Australian player from 1992-1994. After high school Patrick spent one season at Syracuse University where he was a member of the 1996 NCAA Final Four Championship team that finished as the national runner up. He then transferred to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette where he was the point guard from 1997-2000. Following his collegiate career he went on to be the first Bermudian to play professionally. He played four years in Australia, England and Spain, where he was a finalist twice. Patrick graduated from UL-Lafayette in 2000 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Patrick has been married for six years to the former Cassie Frank of Oberlin, La. They have a daughter named Bailee.

So our Baton Rouge media are getting scooped by a ULL beat writer about LSU news. I am disappoint.

I say he definitely fills the void.

Credentials seem OK. Would have to see the finalist list to determine who they had a shot at and then compare. If anyone knows other candidates, please list.

If true, would be an incredible hire.
Delivered Patty Mills to St. Marys and is completely in tune with the Australian basketball scene.
Played high school at Trafton as an Australian exchange student and college Syracuse and ULL.
Further diversifies the staff. There is a lot of talent in Australia. He also has played and coached at a a variety of places.
Home run, in my opinion (if true).

Patrick is currently suspended from the NBA:

Former Saint Mary's assistant basketball coach David Patrick, currently a Houston Rockets scout, was suspended for one year by the NBA for illegal contact with players during the NBA lockout.
The NBA ruled that Patrick, who was an assistant on Randy Bennett's staff in Moraga from 2007-10, had impermissible contact with Rockets players in his role as a Rockets personnel scout. Officials from every NBA team were barred from having any contact with its players during the 161-day lockout from July 1-Dec. 8.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Patrick's transgressions were ruled to be personal communication and not team-related business. As such, the Rockets were neither fined nor penalized for Patrick's actions.
Yahoo! Sports first reported Patrick's suspension.

I read on ESPN somewhere a couple of weeks ago that he was a strong candidate. I heard he interviewed for the job Kirby eventually got.
I remember him being approached about the ULL opening when they hired Bob Marlin (not necessarily by ULL, more by media types checking on his interest) and at the time he seemed to have no interest in leaving the pro game.
Of course, that suspension for a year has certainly changed his tune on that.

Here's my question: What's the angle for him on this staff? He was bringing Australians to St. Mary's but, frankly, LSU doesn't need a pipeline of Australians (though I'm sure they wouldn't turn down another Andrew Bogut).
Can his time with the Rockets translate to him having Texas recruiting connections that can turn him into an more conventional recruiter?
It would be great for LSU if he can recruit Texas and still bring in the occasional Aussie or Euro (David Taylor?).

I think his niche will be Australia, but he has been in the U.S. for a long time. St. Mary's did not just recruit Australian players. I am sure he will be capable of recruiting domestic and international players.
