It has been the mantra for years that LSU could be successful with just a good game manager at QB. I understand that to mean someone who is not prone to many turnovers or bad decisions, does not force throws or try to make plays they are not capable of and generally is efficient in overseeing the offense and time management. Basically a game manager is not asked to necessarily win the game but expected to not do things that would make a loss more likely.

Although there is a relatively small sample by which to judge, using the aforementioned criteria, has Etling as a game manager not met, met, or exceeded expectations thus far?

My opinion is that he has met expectations (and occasionally exceeded expectations).

Against good teams he's going to have to do something "great" 2-3 times per game, whether with his head, arms or legs. Beyond that, make the basic reads and throws and don't turn the ball over (ala Auburn).

Etling is a game changer IMO. He sees the entire field and if given time can find receivers. Exceeded expectations since I had none before.

I hope you are right but he hasnt shown that at all yet. He takes what the defense gives but he isnt throwing people open, or making huge plays on his own. He is hitting wide open receivers (most of the time) which is a big improvement

I agree. I do not think that a 'game manager' is incapable of doing something great but is not continually asked to do so. He has made several throws that might lead one to believe that he is not JUST a game manager (Dupre TD comes to mind). But yes, over the next five games, he will likely have to dial up several 'great' plays.

I think he will fare well. It has been a while since we had a qb that could work the pocket. He has shown me enough to think he can be a decent qb in the league he has the athletes around him to make him look great.

I think game prep is everything for him. He seems to understand how to make the necessary reads and knows who is going to be open. He has some games where he thrown to a lot of receivers. That's gonna help us a lot during Bama.

Etling as a game manager? Possibly. The thing is we have game changers at the WR spot. We have game changers at RB. And we have capable TEs. All he needs to do is get the ball in their hands in space and this team will succeed.

I feel like a lot of people think the term "game manager" has negative connotations, but it's not a negative term. Game managers at QB won us two national championships.

Etling has looked to me like a game manager the past two games; however, he will be called on to make plays and extend drives with some creativity in the upcoming SEC gauntlet. The key is, "game managers" only work if you are managing a lead, so solid defense and establishing the run (with no stupid penalties) is a must.

He also does a great job going through the reads. He doesnt latch on to his WR and then wait till he gets open. He knows where to go if the first isnt there and in the end, the dump is almost always caught and 7-9 yards to prolong the drive.

These WR's haven't played like game changers.

He is more of a game changer than the WR's (or any other player on offense) due to he has his hands on the ball every play, making plays, so he has much more impact on the game. His job is to manage the offense (sort of like the mlb on defense) and to make big plays that greatly affect the game (such as hitting those deep passes against Southern Miss). So yes, a QB's job is to manage the game and make plays that greatly affect the outcome of the game.

Is Danny Etling doing well at the QB position (which I believe is the essence of your question)? Yes he is doing very well. (exceeds expectations)

Consistent? No, but Dural and Chark can take a short pass to the house and when Dupre was playing up to his talent he never lost a 50/50 ball.

THAT is probably the biggest thing I have noted about DE. He makes his progressions and delivers the ball generally right on target. He can extend plays with his feet to side step the rush and buy some extra time. Overall he has done well, and I think he has shown the moxy to make plays. He does not get frustrated, and rarely does he look confused out there. We don't seem to be burning T/O's at the rapid rate with DE running the show...just sayin.

Dupre loses plenty if 50/50 balls, not sure what you're watching.

He seems to be a much better runner than people expect. He has only had a couple scrambles this year but two of them have been for 8-12 yards and he looks quicker than one would think.

Going to need his mobility against that tough front 7 BAMA has.

This and extremely quick decision-making. We need to implement a lot of slants and quick-screens in order to allow him to get the ball out of his hands and gain some confidence.

Etling has been a game changer because of his avoidance of the rush, ability to move, and still get the ball out.

As the team goes down the gauntlet, o line is the weak spot. Etling is really helping the o line out with his great ability to side step the rush and either run or throw. They got to continue to keep the chains moving as we go through the sec gauntlet.
