Depending on how the first two games of LSU’s series go, Paul Mainieri said on @OTB_ESPN, “It’s quite possible I may save (Ma’Khail Hilliard) for the opening game of the SEC tournament.”

He also said Garrett Edwards’s arm is sore. Mainieri doesn’t know if he’ll be available.

Paul Mainieri thinks game 1 of the sect is more important than game 3 of the series vs A&M. Absolutely amazing.

He is saying that AM is doodoo and SECT wins will guarantee us a postseason spot.

Yeah I think the difference in 13 or 14 conference wins is better for our postseason chances vs an extra win in the SECT.

Not sure how I feel about this. Guess this is the line of thinking:

- If we lose first 2 games against A&M, might as well save Hilliard for SECT because we have to win it to get in

- If we go 1-1 first 2 games, have to start Hilliard because we need to try and win that 2nd game at all costs to get to 13-17

- If we win first 2 games, we are 13-16, but wouldnt playing Hilliard and getting the sweep guarantee us in at 14-16? Dont see why he wouldnt throw him in that scenario.

To me the only scenario you dont throw Hilliard this weekend is if we go 0-2 first 2 games.

If LSU loses game 1 and 2 they need to win the SEC tourney...

Who are our other options as starting?

Labas - maybe he was deciding between him & Hilliard & Labas goes game 2 at A&M

I think Lsu needs to win every game they can at this point, but...

If we beat A&M the first two games, I could see saving Hillard for the first game at Hoover. But that is a gamble. If you lose game 3 at A&M, you have to win game 1 in Hoover.

It’s his own fault we are in this spot anyway. LSU shouldn’t get sitting squarely on the NCAA bubble the last week of the regular season.

NCAA allowed large rosters so what PM do - keeps it closer to 35
Meanwhile you still don't have capable pitchers on the roster
Can't wait for the new coach

Which would be what 5 wins? You gotta win them all. Not just one.

It's not a big gamble. If Hilliard doesn't win game 1 of the SEC tournament, who is to say he would have won game 3 of the A&M series?

A&M is much worse than whoever we will play in game 1 of the SECT.

Do people not understand the difference in may and will?

There is zero wrong with seeing how the first two games go then deciding what to do with Hilliard. In my opinion LSU has 4 games (three against A&M and one SEC tourney) to win 3 to guarantee a spot in the tournament.

If you lose the first two have to win the tourney to get in anyway and the first game is single elimination so you save Hilliard.

If you win the first two why not pitch off and see if your bats can win a shootout and if they don’t you have Hilliard in game 1 of the sec tournament.

If you go 1-1 you have to pitch Hilliard game 3.
