Thanks everyone. I finally got in touch with a competent person at the dmv. Regular vehicle plates you renew every two years with the exceptions of trucks. Lsu plate is $50 extra for the two year renewal. I'm getting the LSU plate as soon as my ugly one comes in.

This is what I originally thought it was but the finance guy at the dealership told me wrong

I actually like the "Louisiana" font on the plates. My favorite plate is also the 2005 plate with the pelican in the center. The most recent for the battle of new orleans and the green LA bicentennial are terrible

That being said, for OP, my LSU plate is about $80 every 2 years. I have this one:

I hate toonces, but I like the Tiger stripe. (Plus I swear the tiger stripe makes the plate letters hard to read at a distance and has saved me from at least 2 or 3 camera tickets )

ugly arse horse thing on the new plates

So, can anyone verify if the ugly horse plate is for trucks also? I'll be needing a new plate for my truck soon, and don't want that ugly horse plate.

It's for all vehicles. I bet they will see a rise in the specialty plates soon because no one wants the ugly horse plate

Well, frick that. I'll get an LSU plate. I'm not getting that ugly arse horse thing. Who in their right mind thought that looked good?

ETA: Just called the local OMV. They stated the ugly horse plate is for cars only. Trucks still get the Louisiana Sportsman plates.
