i think you're recognizing that things are changing with the portal. It's going to be harder and harder to build a big dangerous passing game, because you don't have the continuity of players each year. i mean, it's always an issue in college football but now it's even worse. top players are going to be there 3 years only. first year most of them need development, and maybe 2. they could be stuck behind a more experienced guy. most of them will give you a good year or 2, but the 4th year won't be there, or you've got a new qb.

this year you are seeing lesser teams challenge with more old fashioned offenses. and yes, their qb's aren't afraid to take off, even if they are not great running athletes.

i'll be surprised if we don't see some more power football as time goes on. pro sets or variations - 1 back and 2 TE's. of course you'll always have the 3 or 4 receiver sets as well.

anyway, you've got to be able to have a power running game. that's why we're so bad in the red zone. what a difference last week when Josh Williams ran for 2 td's from the 20.

Did Tom Brady have to run? Did Peyton?

First, that is a bygone era. Second, the defenses in pro football are even more aggressive which means the balls get thrown earlier by the QB. Third, as others have said, the LSU opponents don't have to ever worry about Nussmeier running the ball...even when chased out of the pocket. LSU doesn't have to necessarily need a dual threat QB but there is a middle ground. That is someone on a roll out who sees 15 yards of open field in front of them and is WILLING to take a big gain for free.

Les Miles thought the same. He got fired for it, despite going to 2 national championships. And put out some atrocious offenses for about a decade

The Rant-heralded QB from GT fumbled away the game last night, and took sacks during the 2 pt. OTs. Thats because once a team focuses on forcing you to beat them in the air, the DT QB and coaches go into a run-first mentality

Lulz

The entire first era of football was just running. They had to add a rule to actually allow the forward pass at some point.
quote:

Most sources credit Saint Louis University with throwing the first legal forward pass. That team, coached by Eddie Cochems, was undefeated at 11–0 and featured the most potent offense in the country, outscoring their opponents 407–11.

Once the air raid offenses hit the scene, and teams could score with under 2 minutes left to win, that era became todays game

No he’s NOT. If he refuses he’s not capable. He’s proven that throughout this season.

This is simplistic thinking.

While it would be nice to have a true dual threat, it would be just as nice to have a legitimate running game with quality, threatening WRs.

Nuss is more than enough of a QB…even if he’s not a first round talent.

There used to be a thing they called a running game. It had Running Backs and Full Backs.

This is what I miss wrt the modern game - it is what I grew up with, back when "there are only 3 things that can happen when you pass the ball and 2 of them are bad."

then we evolved.

THIS in my feeble mind is our biggest gap. We will never win in the SEC as long as that one weakness goes unchecked.
