Why can a baseball get drafted and get paid and return to college with eligibility, but the same rules don't apply for football players? Both are getting paid, some more than others, but a lot of these high school kids get a lot of money for signing and play "pro" baseball.

Can the baseball player get paid and then return? I don’t think it works that way.

As long as the seams are good and it hasn’t been microwaved too many times I agree

I think as long it’s in a different sport! A baseball player can’t come back and play baseball!

If they actually sign with a team, that's the case. If they get drafted, don't hire an agent, and don't sign, they can play college baseball.

A former professional in one sport can play as an amateur in a different sport. Former minor league baseball players can play college football and visa versa.

The reason you never see football players returning to college to play a different sport is that they aren’t even eligible to play in the NFL until three years after they leave high school. No one is going to sit out three years doing nothing.

Sure you can. Ricky Williams & Mewelde Moore both did it.

A football player likely could theoretically. Just takes more commitment. Once drafted into nfl you are in the show. For baseball players it’s kind of a novelty. Go to spring training or play a few single A games.

Can a football player play 3 years at college, get drafted by the NFL (and sign contract), get cut, then come back and play baseball at college?

Technically, yes. He can come back for one year of eligibility. He used up three playing football.

You have 5 years of eligibility once you enroll in college

Once they enroll in college their 5 year clock starts ticking. So they could come back and play baseball as long as it’s in that 5 year window. But the eligibility will be limited to the end of the 5 years.

This scenario usually plays out with minor league baseball players coming back to college to play football. In that case, they never enrolled in college before, so they have the full 5 years of eligibility

They can get drafted and not sign then return to college baseball. If they sign, they cannot return to college baseball.

Only if it was immediate. You have 10 semesters to compete in 8.

Matt Mauck too.

MLB draft can take high school players (and usually does). Kids like Mauck and Booty are good athletes, make some quick cash with the signing bonus, and have a shot to live the dream. If they can stick in the big leagues, they hit the jackpot.
Most end up stuck in minor league, and quite a few were good in other sports (like football). So you then get a full-grown man in his 20's to start with as a freshman, instead of an 18 yr old kid. His body and hopefully, mind, is more mature- ideal for a QB and leader.

I thought the NCAA might have changed the rules recently, though... wasn't there a skier who had to return his winnings to be eligible to play football?

Nobody remembers Chris Weinke? You can come back as an "amateur" in the NCAA's eyes as long as you're coming back to a sport you haven't made money playing.
